It was a great honour and a mark of our friendship that RENE DJINDJIAN asked me to present this new work from the Lariboisiere neuroradiological school. Professor DJINDJIAN died on 11th October. Introducing this book now, I feel that I am dealing with a fatherless child, where feelings of admiration and pleasure are mixed with the sadness of the loss and the bitterness of an unfinished task. This work on the superselective angiography of the branches of the external carotid artery is a direct continuation of the previous studies of Professor DJINDJIAN, whose name will continue to be closely associated with the development and progress of arteriography in recent years, particularly with arteriography of the spinal cord. It was realised together with his pupil, JEAN-JACQUES MERLAND, whose remarkable thesis for the Doctorat en Medecine a few years ago also dealt with this subject, and with the collaboration of JACQUES THERON, also for many years a pupil of RENE DJINDJIAN, and is translated here by his friend I.F. MOSELEY.

This atlas presents the detailed anatomy of the external carotid arterial branches for interventional radiology. In the last decade, interventional neuroradiology (endovascular treatment via the cerebral arteries) has advanced rapidly thanks to the development of new technological devices, such as detachable coils for brain aneurysm. Anatomical knowledge of the target vessels is essential for interventional neuroradiology, and innovative new imaging techniques like 3D angiography and image fusion techniques can depict the detailed anatomy of small vessels together with surrounding organs. This compilation provides not only 2D angiography images, but also 3D and cross-sectional images, as well as fusion images mainly based on 3D angiography, CT and MRI to further readers’ understanding of the complicated anatomy of the small branches of the external carotid artery. It also describes the branches’ clinical significance in endovascular treatment. The book offers a valuable resource for interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons and neurologists, as well as otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, radiology technicians, and all medical staff involved in interventional radiology.

The basic principles of the management of cerebral arteriovenous mal formations were established during the first phase of the neurological attack on these problems between 1930 and 1960. The leaders were CUSHING, BAILEY and DANDY, but principally OUVECRONA, and in Ger many TONNIS. The experience gained showed that complete excision of the arteriovenous angioma was the only certain cure, and therefore was the procedure of choice. In the present second phase important advances should be made and indeed are occurring. New diagnostic techniques such as total angio graphy, selective and superselective angiography, intraoperative and fluorescein angiography, and the EMI-scanner have been developed. The pathophysiological aspects have been further investigated by indirect and direct measurement of local and general cerebral blood flow. Parallel with these developments operative technique itself has been improved and modified by new methods. A more aggressive attitude has been stimulated towards those angiomas, which had to be regarded as inoperable only a few years ago. Among these many im provements and technical advances include microsurgical techniques, combined stereotactic and microsurgical procedures, artificial emboliza tion of different kinds and the cryosurgical management. Multiple variables such as the age of the patient, the type, localization, and size of the angioma, its clinical picture and the possible complica tions, such as hemorrhage have been analysed and are understood better. These factors influence the indication for, and choice of, the appropriate procedure to a great extent.

Dr. Osborn's classic work, An Introduction to Cerebral Angiography, has now been completely revised, reorganized, and updated and expanded from an introductory book into a comprehensive, state-of-the-art reference on cerebral angiography. Coverage includes new information on vascular territories, film subtraction, and magnetic resonance angiography. The text is thoroughly illustrated with 1,200 radiographs and line drawings, all of them new to this volume. Boxed summaries are used throughout the text to highlight key points.

The 28th annual conference of the German Society for Neurosurgery was held in Cologne, West Germany, from the 18th to the 21st of September 1977. The conference dealt with problems concerning craniocerebral injuries and space-occupying processes in the posterior cranial fossa as well as general topics on clinical practice and research with special attention paid to the work of younger neurosurgeons. This volume is a presentation of the conference results. Within the scope of the general topics, special interest was directed toward the que stion of the current status of cytostatic treatment for brain tumors. In addition to experimental investigations, the results concerning cerebral tumors and medulloblas tomas are reported. Cerebellar tumors represent two further focal points: 1. From the diagnostic viewpoint, specific results from computerized tomography are discussed, especially with regard to the more extensive anatomic difficulties involved in the posterior cranial fossa. 2. With emphasis on cerebellar processes, the results of long-term measurements of intracranial pressure during the postoperative follow-up period are reported.
