Download Yield and Quality of Sugar Beets from Various Rotations at the Scotts Bluff (Nebr.) Field Station, 1930-35 (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Yield and Quality of Sugar Beets From Various Rotations at the Scotts Bluff (Nebr.) Field Station, 1930-35 The acre yield Of sugar in some Of the sugar-beet-growing areas of the United States has been materially increased during the last two decades. This has been accomplished largely as a result Of improved cultural practices, including crop rotation, increased use Of manures and commercial fertilizers, disease control, choice Of variety to be grown, and improved irrigation practice. In some cases the increase 111 yield Of sugar per acre has been the result Of increase in tonnages Of sugar beets produced per acre, more or less at the expense Of quahty as expressed by sucrose percentage and the apparent purity coefficient Of the beets. Factories 111 a number Of districts have adopted a sys tem Of purchasing sugar beets on a price scale based on percentage Of sucrose in the delivered crop. It follows that the higher the average sucrose test, the beet tonnage being generally maintained, the greater the net return per ton Of beets delivered. Therefore consideration Of cropping and manurial practices influencing quality is Of practical importance. The purpose Of this circular is to present the results Obtained over a period Of 6 years, 1930 - 35, in a series Of 29 crop rotations in which sugar beets were included.
