Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) is a rectangular dielectric-filled waveguide, which is synthesized in a planar substrate with arrays of metallic vias to realize bilateral side walls and its transitions with planar structures. These vias act as walls of the waveguide supporting current flow, thus allowing for waveguide mode propagation. Substrate integrated waveguide is suggested for low-loss, low-cost and high density integration applications. SIW preserves the advantages from both the traditional rectangular waveguide and microstrip for easy integration. It is used in designing passive circuits such as resonators, couplers, filters, power dividers, circulators, and antennas. Here, full wave analysis is used to design microwave components such as power dividers, T-junctions and right angle bends. Then a transmission line concept is used to construct a feeding network based on these components to speed up the design process. This concept is verified with full wave analysis. Co-simulation technique is investigated and implemented for the feeding network using these passive components resulting in reduced computation time. The response of the feeding network with the antennas such as an H-plane horn in an array environment is investigated. In the process, modified designs for the H-plane horn with a novel concept of a slot on the H-plane horn are achieved and used as elements for the linear arrays.

Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) is a new type of transmission line. It implements a waveguide on a piece of printed circuit board by emulating the side walls of the waveguide using two rows of metal posts. It inherits the merits both from the microstrip for compact size and easy integration, and from the waveguide for low radiation loss, and thus opens another door to design efficient microwave circuits and antennas at a low cost. This book presents a two-dimensional fullwave analysis method to investigate an SIW circuit composed of metal and dielectric posts. It combines the cylindrical eigenfunction expansion and the method of moments to avoid geometrical descritization of the posts. The method is presented step-by-step, with all the necessary formulations provided for a practitioner who wants to implement this method by himself. This book covers the SIW circuit printed on either homogeneous or inhomogeneous substrate, the microstrip-to-SIW transition and the speed-up technique for the simulation of symmetrical SIW circuits. Different types of SIW circuits are shown and simulated using the proposed method. In addition, several slot antennas and horn antennas fabricated using the SIW technology are also given. Table of Contents: Introduction / SIW Circuits Composed of Metallic Posts / SIW Circuits with Dielectric Posts / Even-Odd Mode Analysis of a Symmetrical Circuit / Microstrip to SIW Transition and Half Mode SIW / SIW Antennas

Overcoming a narrow bandwidth is an important issue in the design of low-profile cavity-backed slot antenna. In this dissertation, a versatile wideband circularly polarized cavity-backed slot antenna is presented. The structure demonstrates dual-resonance behavior, which can be tailored to provide a wide-band or a dual-band response. Circular polarization is generated with four feeds using sequential rotation technique. Polarization modulation is demonstrated by inverting the phase of the two feeds alone. The study presents and discuses antennas principle of operation, design procedure and realization using a standard economical printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication process. Measurement results indicate that an impedance and polarization bandwidth of 31.1% and > 47% respectively with symmetric radiation patterns in both principal planes can be achieved. Excellent polarization purity is obtained at boresight due to the feeding technique used; making the proposed antenna a suitable candidate in applications demanding high purity or for the use in an array environment. A two element antenna array is investigated demonstrating similar bandwidth as that of a single element along with improved radiation performance. Another advantage of the implemented feeding scheme is high isolation between the differential ports of the antenna, which is used to successfully decipher the unique signature of a chipless RF identification (RFID) tag.

In this thesis we investigate substrate integrated waveguides and their application as a slotted waveguide antenna array. The standard slotted waveguide antenna is designed following Elliot's modified design procedure. Elliot's modified design procedure not only takes into account the effects of mutual coupling from the neighboring slots in the array but also the internal higher order modes that are scattered off adjacent slots. The antenna is then converted to a slotted substrate integrated waveguide antenna by carefully placing two rows of metallic via holes to simulate the sidewalls of the rectangular waveguide. The size and location of the via holes are calculated such that they contain the electromagnetic fields inside the substrate integrated waveguide with negligible leakage loss and that the substrate integrated waveguide has the same propagation constant and characteristic impedance as its equivalent rectangular waveguide. Integrating the waveguide into a substrate allows the entire circuit to be fabricated within the substrate and eliminates the need for complicated transitions that link a rectangular waveguide to a planar circuit. The antenna is fed by a 50? shielded stripline. The stripline is shielded by two rows of via holes placed symmetrically on each side of the trace of the stripline. The transition is composed of a single via hole that links the shielded stripline to the substrate integrated waveguide. Back-to-back transitions between a shielded stripline and a substrate integrated waveguide are designed and simulated for three different frequency bands; C band, Ku band & Ka band. The bandwidth of the transitions ranged from 20-35% in all cases. A back-to-back transition was fabricated for the C-band. The fabrication was done by hand using electrical tape for the stripline inner conductor and screws as the via holes. The bandwidth of the measured results show a smaller bandwidth compared to the simulated results. This disparity is due to the imperfections associated with fabricating the transition by hand. A uniform antenna array of 8 slots is designed and simulated with the feed network. A good radiation pattern with sidelobes 14dB below the main beam is observed. The antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 1GHz at the operating frequency of 15GHz.
