This thesis presents some of the first experimental results of the k⊥ jet algorithm at a hadron collider. Gluon jets dominate the final state of proton-antiproton (pp¯) collisions at high center-of-mass energies ( s = 1800 GeV). Quark jets make up a significant fraction of the jet cross section only at high jet transverse momentum pT or low s . For fixed pT, we compare jets at s = 1800 GeV to s = 630 GeV, and interpret differences in terms of differing contributions from gluon and quark jets. We define jets with a successive combination algorithm based on relative transverse momenta ( k⊥ ). To study jet structure, the k⊥ algorithm is then applied within the jet to resolve subjets. We measure the number of subjets within mixed quark and gluon jet samples at s = 1800 and 630 GeV. A simple method is used to extract measurements of pure quark and gluon jet samples separately. The method requires knowledge of the relative mix of quarks and gluons in the two s samples, which we derive from Monte Carlo and a detailed detector simulation. The number of subjets emitted in gluon jets is measured to be approximately twice that in quark jets.

The authors have studied differences between quark and gluon jets using 3-jet events in hadronic decays of Z° bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Gluon jets were identified in symmetric 3-jet events containing one jet tagged as a heavy quark jet and compared with a mixed sample of quark and gluon jets and also with a mixed sample of light quark (u, d and s) and gluon jets. Their preliminary results show that the particle multiplicity in gluon jets is higher than that in light quark jets. These results are in qualitative agreement with QCD expectations. Differences are also observed in particle energy spectra and the jet widths, consistent with QCD expectations.

The number of charged particles inside jets is a widely used discriminant for identifying the quark or gluon nature of the initiating parton and is sensitive to both the perturbative and non-perturbative components of fragmentation. This paper presents a measurement of the average number of charged particles with pT > 500 MeV inside high-momentum jets in dijet events using 20.3 fb-1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV collisions at the LHC. The jets considered have transverse momenta from 50 GeV up to and beyond 1.5 TeV . The reconstructed charged-particle track multiplicity distribution is unfolded to remove distortions from detector effects and the resulting charged-particle multiplicity is compared to several models. Lastly, quark and gluon jet fractions are used to extract the average charged-particle multiplicity for quark and gluon jets separately.

This is a new text on Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force between quarks, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. Although the focus is on experiments, the text also includes anextensive theoretical introduction to the field as well as many exercises with solutions explained in detail.

D0 has implemented and studied a k{sub {perpendicular}} jet algorithm for the first time in a hadron collider. The authors have submitted two physics results for publication: the subjet multiplicity in quark and gluon jets and the central inclusive jet cross section measurements. A third result, a measurement of thrust distributions in jet events, is underway. A combination of measurements using several types of algorithms and samples taken at different center-of-mass energies is desirable to understand and distinguish with higher accuracy between instrumentation and physics effects.

D0 has implemented and calibrated a k[perpendicular] jet algorithm for the first time in a p[bar p] collider. We present two results based on 1992-1996 data which were recently published: the subjet multiplicity in quark and gluon jets and the central inclusive jet cross section. The measured ratio between subjet multiplicities in gluon and quark jets is consistent with theoretical predictions and previous experimental values. NLO pQCD predictions of the k[perpendicular] inclusive jet cross section agree with the D0 measurement, although marginally in the low p[sub T] range. We also present a preliminary measurement of thrust cross sections, which indicates the need to include higher than[alpha][sub s][sup 3] terms and resumation in the theoretical calculations.

We present production measurements of the charged hadrons[pi][sup[+-]], K[sup[+-]] and p/[bar p] in e[sup+]e[sup -] interactions at the Z[sup 0] pole. The excellent particle identification capability of the SLC Large Detector (SLD) at the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) are used. In addition to studies over a wide momentum range in hadronic Z[sup 0] events of all five flavors, we have made the most precise measurements in light (uds), c and b flavor events separately. Unambiguous flavor dependencies have been observed, and the results have been compared with the predictions of several QCD fragmentation models. We have also exploited the unique feature of electron beam polarization in our experiment to compare hadron production separately in quark and antiquark jets. Direct evidence that higher momentum hadrons are more likely to contain the primary quark and antiquark is seen, with precision sufficient to provide new model tests. Finally, we have studied hard gluon jets in detail. We have confirmed that gluon jets have a higher multiplicity of softer particles than light quark jets, and found this enhancement to be the same for[pi][sup[+-]], K[sup[+-]] and p/[bar p] at the few percent level at all momenta. Any overall difference in the hadron fractions is limited to 0.018 at the 95% confidence level, indicating that there are no differences at the hadronization stage in jet formation between gluons and quarks.
