Since writing the articles the author has been called to another sphere of labor, and the circumstances which led to their compilation are explained in the following paragraphs, quoted from the prefatory remarks accompanying the original publication. "The system of instruction in Quantitative Analytical Chemistry, organized in the School of Mines, Columbia College, by Dr. C. F. Chandler, has been developed by the Assistants, who have had charge of the Laboratory for Quantitative Analysis, Mr. Alexis A. Julien, Dr. Paul Schweitzer, and the writer. The practical examples and the methods of analysis were originally selected by Prof. Chandler; the latter have been modified by the Assistants, and from time to time they have introduced new processes, conforming to the advances made in this department of chemical science.
