Excerpt from Studies on the Book of Genesis Important as Scripture Commentaries are, and indispensable as they must be to the rapid progress of the gospel in Spanish speaking lands, it will be readily seen that the demand for them among the possible Evangelical communicants (most of them very poor) found in Europe, America, North Africa and the former Insular possessions of Spain, including ministers and students for the ministry, is not sufficient to induce any publishing house to risk money in a work like mine; SO that I am reduced to the necessity of doing all the work, and then raising all the money to print it. Excerpt from The Book of Genesis: For Bible Classes and Private Study The purpose of these books on the Bible is to give to the laity, men as well as women, an opportunity to introduce into their daily lives a systematic study of Holy Scripture. Nor will the books be found less useful to those of the clergy who feel the need of direc tion in their reading. Each volume constitutes a unit, and is planned as a guide to eight months' work of an hour or more a day. Specialists in each department have been secured, who will guarantee scholarly and sound interpretation. They will also endeavour to present their subjects in the most effective and profit able way which is consonant with the best methods of leading the student to diligent work, careful think ing, and thoughtful expression. Excerpt from Notes on the Book of Genesis With the exception of the four gospels, I suppose there is no book in the Bible more deeply interesting than the Book of Genesis. It comes to us with all the freshness of God's first book to His people. The contents are varied, highly instructive, and most precious to the stu dent of God's entire book. These Notes are again laid at the Master's feet, in earnest prayer that He would take them up and send them forth under the stamp of His own divine approval. Amen. Excerpt from The Book of Genesis Of physical forces; if, in short, there is no God, no consciousness at the beginning as at the end of all things, then nothing can be more melancholy than our position. Our higher desires which seem to separate us so immeasurably from the brutes, we have, only that they may be cut down by the keen edge of time, and wither in barren disappointment our reason we have, only to enable us to see and measure the brevity of our span, and so live our little day, not joyously as the un foreseeing beasts, but shadowed by the hastening gloom of anticipated, inevitable and everlasting night; our faculty for worshipping and for striving to serve and to resemble the perfect living One, that faculty which seems to be the thing of greatest promise and Of finest quality in us, and to which is certainly due the largest part of what is admirable and profitable in human history, is the most mocking and foolishest of all our parts; But, God be thanked, He has revealed himself to us has given us in the harmonious and progressive movement of all around us, sufficient indication that, even in the material world, intelligence and purpose reign an indication which becomes immensely clearer as we pass into the world of man; and which, in presence of the person and life of Christ attains the brightness of a conviction which illuminates all besides. Excerpt from The Genesis of Genesis: A Study of the Documentary Sources of the First Book of Moses in Accordance With the Results of Critical Science Illustrating the Presence of Bibles Within the Bible The attention of the reading public of America has been called frequently of late to the claims of the science of Higher Criticism, a study all-important to a correct understanding of the Scriptures; and in particular to that theory of the science which maintains the origin of the Pentateuch from a compilation of older documents. They have been assured of the practically unanimous acceptance of this theory abroad, and have been themselves witnesses of the divided opinions of scholars at home. Considering the importance of the subject, the enormous mass of accumulated evidence pro and con, the conflicting claims of scholars as to the resulting benefit or injury to accrue to Christian faith from the acceptance of the theory, it should be apparent to all, as a primary axiom, that the reading public are entitled to judge for themselves. As to the method of presenting the facts to the public, two propositions are easily established. I. The public require, not controversial argument, but explanation. The method of the controversialist, which ever side be championed, rarely gains more than a partisan applause guaranteed in advance, and the converts to be made among those "convinced against their will." It assumes that the public has already made up its mind, or else to judge for the public. The assumption is either false or impertinent. A public accustomed to exercise the right of private judgment demands, in the case of so important and widely supported a theory, a plain statement of the case, an explanation of the general principles involved, of the nature, rather than the details, of the argument, and as simple a presentation of methods and results as possible. It wants "the documents in the case." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
