The characteristics of the activated carbon and the changes in that of the modified activated carbon were verified by SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS, BET and FT-IR analyses;·The SEM studies indicate the formation of regular structure with net thin fibrils of AC; and spherical shape and smaller than 18nm in size of porous surface created in AC-MnO2-NC. The EDX studies show the presence of the elements, Carbon, Oxygen, Sodium, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Chlorine, Potassium and Calcium in AC. In case of AC-MnO2-NC in addition to these elements, the capping Manganese is proved. The XRD studies indicate the formation of short range crystalline structure and abundance of amorphous structure of the activated carbon and the modified activated carbon. The presence of Carbon and Oxygen in the activated carbon and in addition to these elements, the presence of Manganese in the modified activated carbon are also revealed by XPS studies. The BET studies show that the surface area of AC is 83.54m2/g and that for AC-MnO2-NC is 147.76m2/g. The FT-IR study suggest that the capping of MnO2 in modified activated carbon and the presence of the functional groups viz., -OH, -C=O, -C=C, -C-H, -CH2, -CH3 in the two adsorbents. The percentage of dye removal increases with increasing agitation time and adsorbent dose and decreases with increasing initial dye concentration. An increase in the time of agitation was found to be directly proportional to the amount of dye adsorbed per unit weight of the adsorbent. The adsorption of dyes from aqueous solutions attain equilibrium at different agitation time which depend on initial dye concentrations and initial pH of the dye solutions.

Batik industry is a very famous textile industry in Malaysia especially in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Started in small scale, today it has become one of the highest economic growths in Malaysia due to high demands locally and from abroad. However, the wastewater from textile industry contributes to water pollution since it utilizes a lot of chemicals. Preliminary studies show that the wastewater from this homemade textile industry contains grease, wax, heavy metal, surfactant, suspended solid, and dyes (organic and inorganic). This research was done to study the potential of granular activated carbon (GAC) for the adsorption of synthetic batik dye (SBD) from aqueous solution by the variation of solution with different contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration of SBD. Activated carbon (AC) is commonly known as one of the great adsorbents in adsorption process. For this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) has been used since it is preferred for all adsorption of gases and vapors as their rate of diffusion are faster. The synthetic batik dye has been chose because the research about this topic has not been done yet. There are three parameters that will be investigated; effect of adsorbent dosage (w), effect of contact time and effect of initial synthetic batik dye concentration. All results from the experiment were being analyzed using UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). The results show that the color of the dye changes with different contact time, adsorbent dosage and also different initial concentration of synthetic batik dye. The data collected could be used to improve the effectiveness of dye removal from the batik industry wastewater using granular activated carbon (GAC). The research showed the applicability of GAC to adsorb the color of SBD. For SBD initial concentration shows the highest percentage concentration difference which is 69.75 % occurring at 0.2 g/L. While for adsorbent dosage, the highest dosage which is 60 gram get the highest percentage; 94.77 %. And for contact time, the longest contact time which is 20 minutes gets the highest percentage where the percentage is 95.06 %.

Textile dyes have adverse effects on human beings and aquatic life. Textile dye waste is a potential source of surface and ground water contamination if it is not properly collected, treated and disposed of. The main objective of the research was to prepare activated carbon from an agricultural solid waste, coconut coir and to determine its effectiveness in removing textile dyes from aqueous solution and in textile dye waste treatment. The coconut coir activated carbon (CCAC) and a commercial activated carbon (CAC) were characterised in terms of ash content, bulk density, pH, pHZPC, surface area, micropore area, micropore volume, average pore diameter, surface morphology, surface acidic functional groups, basic sites and surface functional groups. Adsorption of four different classes of textile dyes, namely Acid Red 18 (AR 18), Disperse Red 343 (DR 343), Reactive Yellow 15 (RY 15) and Direct Blue 86 (DB 86) by CCAC and CAC were examined.

The objective of this work is the study of adsorption of dye solution which is a mixture of three dyes (methylene blue, congo red & malachite green) using commercial activated carbon. Removal of these dyes from aqueous solution using commercial activated carbon has been investigated. Liquid phase adsorption experiments were conducted. Batch adsorption studies are carried out by observing the effect of experimental parameters, namely, pH, amount of adsorbents, contact time and temperature. Adsorption capacity of activated carbon is determined for competitive adsorption of mixture of dyes. Optimum conditions for dye removal are studied like pH value, contact time required, amount of adsorbent, temp, etc. The results generated by this project work can be used for determination of optimum conditions for adsorption of mixture of dyes in aqueous solutions. Dyes are present in mixture form in various Industrial effluents like Textile Industries, Sewage water, Water treatment plants. This work can have use in Design of adsorption columns for dyes removal.
