Excerpt from Studies of Inheritance in Rabbits In this paper are recorded observations upon inheritance in rabbits which were made in the Harvard Zoological Laboratory with the aid of a grant from the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The authors desire to express their appreciation of that aid, without which these observations could not have been made. The experiments described were planned by the senior author, and this report also was written by him. Dr. H. E. Walter has made the majority of the extremely laborious observations and computations concerning the inheritance of ear-length and of body-weight. Dr. R. C. Mullenix prepared and measured the rabbit skeletons as a foundation for Part III of this paper; while both Dr. Walter and Mr. Cobb rendered valuable assistance in connection with the study which has been made of color inheritance. The senior author alone is responsible for the analytical treatment of the observations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Genetic Studies of Rabbits and Rats The analysis of such genetic differences is difficult. A pioneer attempt was made by Galton (1889) in his study of human stature, the inheritance of which he characterized as blending. This term was adopted by Castle et al. (1909) in describing the inheritance of ear-length and body-size in rabbits. A Mendelian interpretation of size-inheritance was later advocated by Lang based on the multiple-factor hypothesis of nilsson-ehle and this has now received general acceptance. Davenport (1917) has recently applied it to human stature, but has gone a step farther in assuming that the genetic factors which govern size in one part of the body are often not the same as those which govern the size of other parts. Punnett and Bailey (1914, 1918) in their studies of size-inheritance in poultry and in rabbits bring forward a different hypothesis. Excerpt from Journal of Genetics, Vol. 8: 1918-1919 Quite recently a few observations on the growth of rabbits have been published by Davies who states that when a small breed is crossed with a medium sized one the young approximate to the size of the smaller parent. But he admits that the cross was only made in one way using the animal of' the smaller breed as the mother. He is inclined to consider that the reciprocal cross may give a different result, as he holds that larger size depends more upon the mother than upon the father. We cannot yet pretend to know very much about the inheritance of weight in the rabbit. It is clear however that investigations of this nature in the mammal do not yield such clean-cut results as in birds (of. Phillips Punnett and Bailey and it is evident that a great deal of laborious work must yet be done before we can understand a process of which the theoretical, as well as the economic, importance is so considerable. We do not therefore propose to discuss the matter from a general point of view until we are in possession of fuller and more complete data than those of which we may now proceed to give some account. Explore the fascinating world of genetics and heredity in this pioneering study by Castle, a renowned biologist and geneticist. Drawing on experiments with rabbits, rats, and mice, he lays out the principles and mechanisms of inheritance that govern the traits and characteristics of living organisms, and offers insights into the evolutionary processes that shape the diversity of life.
