Transitioning from middle school to high school can be difficult for students, and while each student experiences it differently, there are some common themes that indicate helping students transition from middle school to high school may be worth considering. Students going from middle school to high school can experience a variety of emotions including fear, nervousness, excited, or anxious. How a student might feel about the transition process depends on many factors including the level of knowledge they have about the process, how prepared they are for the transition, and how many changes will be taking place. For students who are moving to an entirely new school in the neighborhood or transitioning from a smaller feeder school to a large integrated high school, life is going to change to some degree. The researcher's purpose was to illustrate and compare attitudes early in the school year after the student's transition from middle school to high school. Specifically, the researcher addressed the following questions: 1) To what extent are attitudes of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities similar to those of ninth grade students who did not participate in transition activities? 2) To what extent are attitudes of parents of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities similar to those of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities? Various events were planned throughout the eighth grade year to prepare the students for high school. A Parent Night at the middle school, a Curriculum Fair, a Freshman Showcase, and a Freshman Orientation are described. In addition, a Freshman Seminar class designed for at-risk students is outlined. The researcher examined data from a survey given to students and their parents after the transition to high school. A similar survey was administered to students who did not experience any transition activities prior to ninth grade. After assessment of the student responses, the researcher concluded that while transition activities are beneficial for the majority of students, there was no statistical significance in attitudes and perception between the Treatment Group and the Control Group.
