Transitioning from middle school to high school can be difficult for students, and while each student experiences it differently, there are some common themes that indicate helping students transition from middle school to high school may be worth considering. Students going from middle school to high school can experience a variety of emotions including fear, nervousness, excited, or anxious. How a student might feel about the transition process depends on many factors including the level of knowledge they have about the process, how prepared they are for the transition, and how many changes will be taking place. For students who are moving to an entirely new school in the neighborhood or transitioning from a smaller feeder school to a large integrated high school, life is going to change to some degree. Research on the transition process indicates that proactive planning may decrease students' negative feelings toward transitions and result in fewer disciplinary referrals, suspensions, tardiness, absences, incidents of hazing, and dropout rates.

The transition from high school is challenging for any student, but for young adults with disabilities, it can be even more difficult. In addition to adjusting to increased academic demands in an environment where there is less structure and support, students have to navigate a disability services system that is very different from the one they knew in high school. But with the proper preparation, students can enjoy success! This practical guide explains how the system for accommodations works, describes students' rights and responsibilities within that system, and employs the voices of seasoned professionals and college students to explain the skills and strategies students should develop while they are in high school to ensure success when they reach college. As a bonus, it also offers answers to questions students with disabilities frequently ask about disclosing their disability in the admissions process.

What does the research say about effective transition systems between the middle grades and high school? The most successful schools see the transition between the middle grades and high school as a process, not an event. These schools involve teachers, students and families in continuous planning to support students' academic and social success in high school and beyond. Students that have a successful transition are more likely to achieve in the 9th grade, to attend regularly and to not drop out of school. They are more likely to develop and sustain positive social relationships with peers and with adults. Four components of effective transition systems have been identified. They include providing students and families accurate and useful information, supporting students' social success in high school, preparing students for academic success in high school, and working collaboratively to monitor transition plans and adjust those plans based on data about student success (attendance, achievement, dropout rate). A list of resources is included.
