A general survery of the preparation and application of disazo dyes, imidazole dyes, pyrazole dyes and their related intermediates has been made. A range of disazo dyes has been prepared by the synthesis of the ... methanesulphonate salts of aniline and its substituted analogues, and their subsequent coupling reaction in the synthesis of the intermediate monoazo dye followed by a second diazotization and coupling reaction to give the required disazo dyes. Colour-structure relationships are discussed, and PPP MO calculations used to evaluate colour and structure relationships. The synthesis of a series of azo colourants from diazotised arylamines and 4(5)-cyano- 5(4)-hydroxyimidazole is described. The dyes exhibit a large bathochromic shift of the visible absorption maxima relative to analogous dyes derived from carbocyclic coupling components. A series of pyrazolyazo dyes was also synthesized, the hues of which varied from yellow to red. The dyes did not a exhibit bathochromic shift of the visible absorption maxima relative to analogous dyes derived from carbocyclic diazo components, but gave bright hues characteristic of heterocyclic dyes. The colour-structure relationships are discussed.

A range of monoazo and disazo dyes based on 4-aminoazobenzene have been prepared. Differences in colour, dyeing and fastness properties between monoazo and disazo dyes have been reported. Their structure-property relationships with respect to the electronic spectra of the dyes, and to their coloration and fastness properties on polyester fibres have been investigated. 2-Amino-4,5-(4,6-; 4,7-; and 5,7-)dichlorobenzothiazoles have been prepared by the cyclisation of the corresponding dichlorophenyl- thiourea with concentrated sulphuric acid and ammonium bromide. The phenylthioureas were obtained from benzoylisothiocyanate and the appropriate amines, and subsequent hydrolysis of the resulting benzothioureas with aqueous sodium hydroxide or sulphuric acid. Coloration and lightfastness evaluations of the dichlorobenzo- thiazolylazo dyes on polyester fibres indicate that they can be viable alternative to anthraquinone based dyes of similar hue. Structure-property relationships with respect to the electronic spectra of the dyes have been investigated.

Today synthetic dyes are used extensively in the textile dyeing, paper printing, color photography, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, cosmetic and leather industries. As of now, over 100,000 different dyes are available, with an annual production of over 700,000 metric tons. These industries discharge an enormous amount of colored effluents into natural water bodies, with or without treatment. The textile industry alone discharges 280,000 tons of dyes every year, making it the largest contributor to colored effluent discharge. Although a variety of treatment technologies are available, including adsorption, chemical oxidation, precipitation, coagulation, filtration electrolysis and photodegradation, biological and microbiological methods employing activated sludge, pure cultures, microbial consortia and degradative enzymes are economically viable, effective and environmentally responsible options. As such, this book gathers review articles from international experts working on the microbial degradation of synthetic dyes, offering readers the latest information on the subject. It is intended as a quick reference guide for academics, scientists and industrialists around the world.
