Exposed beds in the Gomez Peak area include a 1000-foot Cretaceous section of Comanche (Kent Station limestone, Buda limestone) and Gulf series (Boquillas formation and "Austin-Taylor" marl) overlain by a 1600-foot Tertiary section of the McCutcheon group. Quaternary deposits, which cover a major part of the area, are classified into five mappable units. Sediments were deposited out of the warm shallow Mexican sea to form the Cretaceous rocks. Fissure eruptions, one of which is near Gomez Peak, produced the Tertiary lavas and pyroclastic formations, which once sheeted over the whole area but now rim it on the south with bounding escarpments. The area is transversed by a northwestward trend of normal faulting and folding that marks the eastern edge of a subsurface Permian reef
