This research investigated, from an internal organisational perspective, how and why one organisation's practices respond to external environmental forces. These responses have implications for environmental performance. The New Green Strategy Model was used to explain the organisation's response. External forces: government, special interest groups, customers, financial-accounting community, and local community were analysed. The reaction to the external forces was modified by employee's attitudes towards these greening pressures. These attitudes, embodied in cultures and beliefs, were categorised into resistant, compliant, accommodative and proactive groups and the values were measured by a quantitative survey. Leadership styles, follower characteristics, organisational structure and environmental responsibilities, systems, and audits had an impact on level of response. The functional areas of production, exploration, marketing, human resources, environment, public affairs, resource allocation and legal affairs responded to the external pressures in a variety of inconsistent ways.
