Excerpt from The Story of the Garden of Eden The primitive and interesting story of the Garden of Eden in the Book of Genesis is contained in the second account, or tradition of the creation, which is evidently quite distinct and at variance with that which precedes it. After relating how man was formed and the trees and plants were made to grow, it is stated that man was placed in the Garden of Eden planted by the Lord God (Jehovah Elohim), "to dress it and to keep it." And that "the Lord God commanded the man, saying. Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it." Every beast of the field and fowl of the air are said to have been formed out of the ground and brought to Adam to be named, "and whatsoever Adam called every living creature that was the name thereof." Then woman is said to have been formed out of one of Adam's ribs as a "help meet for him." It being supposed to be necessary for Jehovah to cause "a deep sleep to fall upon Adam" to effect that object. Getting Back into the Garden of Eden studies the story of the Garden of Eden in-depth from an historical-psychological perspective for the first time. It explores how the historical experiences of the Hebrew people became transformed into the psychologically meaningful and therefore symbolic characters and situations in the first three chapters of the Genesis story. It examines the possibilities of the placement and inspiration for the Garden from the oases of the Arabian desert and the advanced irrigation culture of the areas of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

The Faith that God Built series by Gary Bower uses the same whimsical style of storytelling as The House that Jack Built, using rhyme to introduce preschoolers through second graders to favorite Bible stories. Gary has a well-developed talent for creating engaging narratives that also teach biblical truths through rhyme. The Beautiful Garden of Eden tells the story of Adam and Eve's disobedience, allowing sin to ruin what was perfect and beautiful.

The story of the Garden of Eden is one of the most familiar in the Bible. But if we read it without preconceptions, we discover a narrative as its original audience would have heard it, as its author intended. Robbins explores why the man was created first, and the woman for and from him. She elucidates the reason for the particular punishments, and why the storyteller gave a woman the starring role. She does all this by highlighting the importance of wordplay in the Garden of Eden story. This book introduces not only a wordsmith but, above all, a supreme storyteller who is bound to become a personal favorite.
