This is our seventh report in Save the Children’s ‘Stop the War on Children’ series. Five years on since our first Stop the War on Children report, more and more children find themselves in contexts affected by conflict, with devastating consequences for their lives and their futures. The analysis in this report comes from updated data on the number of children living in conflict zones conducted by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Save the Children’s analysis of the 2023 United Nations annual report of the Secretary-General on children and armed conflict, and our mapping of the number of grave violations in the reports on children and armed conflict from 2005-22.

The Covid-19 pandemic did not bring a lull in the war on children. In 2020, the number of children living in conflict actually rose. There has been progress in some areas – most notably, verified incidents of children killed and maimed in conflict fell in 2020 for the second successive year. However, in other areas the situation for children became worse. Of the UN’s six grave violations against children in conflict, across four of them – recruitment of children, child abductions, sexual violence against children, and attacks on schools and hospitals – the numbers of verified incidents in 2020 increased. Equally important, the number of verified incidents of recruitment grew in 2020 for the second successive year. This latest report in our Stop the War on Children series looks in detail at one of the grave violations: children at risk of recruitment and use by armed forces or armed groups. There has been a rise in the number of verified incidents of children recruited and used by armed forces and groups, and the number of groups recruiting children has also increased. In three countries – Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen – the vast majority of children in conflict zones are deemed at risk of recruitment.

This book describes the unholy war perpetrated by the myriad state agencies, perhaps in some cases unwittingly, against loving fathers remaining in their children's lives post-divorce or separation. The author has had 5 Ombudsman Investigations to his credit, 3 were Parliamentary, his credentials are exemplary. He has never been cautioned, charged or arrested, yet he and his children were subjected to the most appalling gender discrimination imaginable by multiple state agencies operating in secrecy. This book is a 'how to' survive, and most importantly, protect vulnerable children and parents by exposing this institutional malpractice.

This is the story of two children caught in the midst of war.It is 1939 and thirteen-year-old Ilse, half-Jewish, has been sent out of Germany by her Aryan mother to a place of supposed safety. Her journey takes her from the labyrinthine bazaars of Morocco to Paris, a city made hectic at the threat of Nazi invasion. At the same time in Germany, Nicolai, a boy miserably destined for the Nazi Youth movement, finds comfort in the friendship of Ilse’s mother, the nursemaid hired to take care of his young sister. Gripping and poignant, The Children’s War is a stunning novel of wartime lives, of parents and children, of adventure and self-discovery.

A much-needed perspective on how to mother difficult adult children while balancing one’s own needs. Difficult brings to life the conflicts that arise for mothers who are confronted with the unexpected, burdensome, and even catastrophic dependencies of their adult children associated with mental illness, substance use, or chronic unemployment. Through real stories of mothers and their challenging adult children, this book offers relatable, provocative, and, at times, shocking illustrations of the excruciating maternal dilemma: Which takes precedence—the needs of the mother or of the distressed adult child? With guidance for finding social support, staying safe, engaging in self-care, and helping the adult child, Difficult is a compassionate resource for those living in a family situation which too many keep secret and allows readers to see that they are not alone.
