The book provides an introduction to advanced topics in stochastic processes and related stochastic analysis, and combines them with a sound presentation of the fundamentals of financial mathematics. It is wide-ranging in content, while at the same time placing much emphasis on good readability, motivation, and explanation of the issues covered. Financial mathematical topics are first introduced in the context of discrete time processes and then transferred to continuous-time models. The basic construction of the stochastic integral and the associated martingale theory provide fundamental methods of the theory of stochastic processes for the construction of suitable stochastic models of financial mathematics, e.g. using stochastic differential equations. Central results of stochastic analysis such as the Itô formula, Girsanov's theorem and martingale representation theorems are of fundamental importance in financial mathematics, e.g. for the risk-neutral valuation formula (Black-Scholes formula) or the question of the hedgeability of options and the completeness of market models. Chapters on the valuation of options in complete and incomplete markets and on the determination of optimal hedging strategies conclude the range of topics. Advanced knowledge of probability theory is assumed, in particular of discrete-time processes (martingales, Markov chains) and continuous-time processes (Brownian motion, Lévy processes, processes with independent increments, Markov processes). The book is thus suitable for advanced students as a companion reading and for instructors as a basis for their own courses. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Stochastische Prozesse und Finanzmathematik by Ludger Rüschendorf, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com) and in a subsequent editing, improved by the author. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

From the reviews: "Paul Glasserman has written an astonishingly good book that bridges financial engineering and the Monte Carlo method. The book will appeal to graduate students, researchers, and most of all, practicing financial engineers [...] So often, financial engineering texts are very theoretical. This book is not." --Glyn Holton, Contingency Analysis

This text is an introduction to the modern theory and applications of probability and stochastics. The style and coverage is geared towards the theory of stochastic processes, but with some attention to the applications. In many instances the gist of the problem is introduced in practical, everyday language and then is made precise in mathematical form. The first four chapters are on probability theory: measure and integration, probability spaces, conditional expectations, and the classical limit theorems. There follows chapters on martingales, Poisson random measures, Levy Processes, Brownian motion, and Markov Processes. Special attention is paid to Poisson random measures and their roles in regulating the excursions of Brownian motion and the jumps of Levy and Markov processes. Each chapter has a large number of varied examples and exercises. The book is based on the author’s lecture notes in courses offered over the years at Princeton University. These courses attracted graduate students from engineering, economics, physics, computer sciences, and mathematics. Erhan Cinlar has received many awards for excellence in teaching, including the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University. His research interests include theories of Markov processes, point processes, stochastic calculus, and stochastic flows. The book is full of insights and observations that only a lifetime researcher in probability can have, all told in a lucid yet precise style.

This book gives a systematic introduction to the basic theory of financial mathematics, with an emphasis on applications of martingale methods in pricing and hedging of contingent claims, interest rate term structure models, and expected utility maximization problems. The general theory of static risk measures, basic concepts and results on markets of semimartingale model, and a numeraire-free and original probability based framework for financial markets are also included. The basic theory of probability and Ito's theory of stochastic analysis, as preliminary knowledge, are presented.

This book introduces the theory of stochastic processes with applications taken from physics and finance. Fundamental concepts like the random walk or Brownian motion but also Levy-stable distributions are discussed. Applications are selected to show the interdisciplinary character of the concepts and methods. In the second edition of the book a discussion of extreme events ranging from their mathematical definition to their importance for financial crashes was included. The exposition of basic notions of probability theory and the Brownian motion problem as well as the relation between conservative diffusion processes and quantum mechanics is expanded. The second edition also enlarges the treatment of financial markets. Beyond a presentation of geometric Brownian motion and the Black-Scholes approach to option pricing as well as the econophysics analysis of the stylized facts of financial markets, an introduction to agent based modeling approaches is given.

This classroom-tested text provides a deep understanding of derivative contracts. Unlike much of the existing literature, the book treats price as a number of units of one asset needed for an acquisition of a unit of another asset instead of expressing prices in dollar terms exclusively. This numeraire approach leads to simpler pricing options for complex products, such as barrier, lookback, quanto, and Asian options. With many examples and exercises, the text relies on intuition and basic principles, rather than technical computations.

A comprehensive and self-contained treatment of the theory and practice of option pricing. The role of martingale methods in financial modeling is exposed. The emphasis is on using arbitrage-free models already accepted by the market as well as on building the new ones. Standard calls and puts together with numerous examples of exotic options such as barriers and quantos, for example on stocks, indices, currencies and interest rates are analysed. The importance of choosing a convenient numeraire in price calculations is explained. Mathematical and financial language is used so as to bring mathematicians closer to practical problems of finance and presenting to the industry useful maths tools.
