Stepping motors are used wherever repeated stop-start or intermittent motions are encountered. Found in a diverse range of machines such as clocks, typewriters, automatic draughting machines, numerically controlled machine tools, and computer peripherals, stepping motors offer easy compatibility with digital equipment and ease of control. This thoroughly updated second edition of Stepping Motors offers a practical approach to the subject and relates the workings, design, and construction of these motors to underlying electromagnetic principles. The reader is taken through a brief history of stepping-motor development and is provided with expert treatments of the theory, terminology, control systems, and likely applications associated with the devices. The text is copiously illustrated with clear and helpful diagrams and contains much detailed information. It is the perfect introduction for students and professionals in electrical and electronic engineering.

Richly illustrated, this book covers all aspects of stepping motors including basic theory; principles of design, construction, and application; torque production mechanism; dynamic characteristics; driving techniques with and without a microprocessor; and applications in factory and office automation systems. "The clarity of the presentation reflects Kenjo's mastery of this field. His frequent use of diagrams and photographs of actual equipment further helps convey the basic technical concepts....The extensive use of stepping motors in computer disk systems and in printers and printing terminals makes this a most timely and useful reference....Recommended."--Choice

Download Microprocessor Controller for Stepping Motors Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A new concept for digital computer control of multiple stepping motors which operate in a severe electromagnetic pulse environment is presented. The motors position mirrors in the beam-alignment system of a 100-kJ CO2 laser. An asynchronous communications channel of a computer is used to send coded messages, containing the motor address and stepping-command information, to the stepping-motor controller in a bit serial format over a fiber-optics communications link. The addressed controller responds by transmitting to the computer its address and other motor information, thus confirming the received message. Each controller is capable of controlling three stepping motors. The controller contains the fiber-optics interface, a microprocessor, and the stepping-motor driven circuits. The microprocessor program, which resides in an EPROM, decodes the received messages, transmits responses, performs the stepping-motor sequence logic, maintains motor-position information, and monitors the motor's reference switch. For multiple stepping-motor application, the controllers are connected in a daisy chain providing control of many motors from one asynchronous communications channel of the computer.
