Rhodes and the Holocaust is the story of La Juderia, the Jewish community that once lived and flourished on Rhodes Island, the largest of the twelve Dodecanese islands in the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Turkey. While the focus of the accounts of the Holocaust has for the most part been on the Jewish populations of Eastern and Middle Europe, little seems to be known of the events that affected those communities in Greece and the surrounding Aegean Islands during that time. The population of this group was almost annihilated, reduced from a thriving community of over 80,000, to less than a 1,000 survivors, who were left to tell their stories. Among the victims of Rhodes Island were the grandmother and aunt of the author, who were killed by falling bombs, and his grandfather, who was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp. This history tells of the deceit and inhuman treatment the entire Jewish community of Rhodes experienced during their deportation and eventual liberation by the Russian Army. The heart-wrenching story of the Rhodes Jewish community is told through the experiences of a thirteen-year-old boy, taken by the Nazis to Auschwitz along with his father and his eleven-year-old sister.; Most of all, Rhodes and the Holocaust makes known the story of that communitys existence and struggle for survival.

The first cookbook written by the Or Chadash Sisterhood Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel, Cooking the Sephardic Way, was published forty years ago and continues to be a best seller. The sisterhood has now added to their repertoire with the Sephardic Heritage Cookbook. While the original membership of Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel could trace their family history to the Ottoman Empire, the Temple Sisterhood has expanded to include women from Iran, Morocco, Egypt, Israel, and the Caribbean. They too are eager to share their heritage and make the Sephardic Heritage Cookbook an eclectic mix of delicious dishes. Enjoy Ash-e-Reshteh (Iranian noodle soup), rice and cheese borekas (Sephardic pastries), white bread challah in the Turkish tradition, and a wide variety of sweet delicacies, like cayk-e-yazdi (Yazdi cupcakes), basbousa (Egyptian yogurt cake), ashuplados (meringue cookies), and others. Many recipes include photos to use as a reference. The authors have also included family stories. Each recipe was collected during luncheons in which sisterhood members shared their traditions with each other and ensured that their warm family memories would never be forgotten. The journeys and the bonds the members have formed by cooking together are truly inspiring.

This book includes research papers submitted to and presented during the first international conference on Cultural Sustainable Tourism (CST) that was held in Thessaloniki, Greece in November of 2017. Discussing complex relations between Culture, tourism, and the role of planners and architects in their maintenance, this conference was jointly organized by IEREK –International Experts for Research Enrichment and Knowledge Exchange- and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The conference was an attempt to shed a light on the significance of Culture and Heritage as two important factors attracting tourists and promoting economic growth and convey civilizations through tourism. Themes covered in this book give an overview on current research and topics of discussion that focus on Cultural sustainable tourism through several sections. The first section, titled “Art, Architecture and Culture”, discusses urban regeneration as a road to the preservation of cultural and tourist destinations and the importance of understanding and benefitting from our heritage to allow for modern day improvements. “Heritage Tourism”, the section 2 of the book, is more focused on offering nontraditional solutions and management plans to sustain cultural tourism and improve quality of life around historically significant areas. The third section on the “City and Rural Tourism” follows by providing sustainable strategies to attract tourists and promoting the use of existing resources. The last and final section with the title of “Sustainable Tourism, Development and Environmental Management” maneuvers around the different yet common environmental issues existing today and proposes new and innovative solutions for their elimination. Presenting a wide range of topics in chapters, this book provides the scientific community with a collection of unique and enlightening literature.
