Deneys Schreiner was an academic, a scientist and a man of strong liberal principles, with a good sense of humor and widespread interests in the sciences, arts and public affairs. In his steady way, he transformed the University of Natal and the community around it. Between the 1960s and 1980s, Schreiner supported and initiated several endeavors to promote constitutional futures other than those imposed by the apartheid government. One of the most significant was the Buthelezi Commission, which he chaired. This biography sets out the context of the times in which Schreiner lived and his life from his ancestors to his tenure as Vice-Principal. This book is created with extensive archival research, supported by interviews with family members, former colleagues, friends, and journalists. Schreiner was a man who made a considerable contribution to the struggle for democracy in South Africa. And then there is the story of his beard, once described as a potent symbol of his presence and implacable integrity. Print edition not for sale in Sub Saharan Africa.

This is the second of a three-volume history by Bill Guest of a major South African university founded as the Natal University College in Pietermaritzburg in 1909. Despite trying conditions, including two world wars, the university expanded, developed a second campus (Howard College) in Durban and became the University of Natal in 1949.The first volume covered the history of Natal University College from 1909 to 1949. This volume covers the years 1949 to 1976 during which the university continued to develop as a dual-centred institution while struggling to maintain its autonomy. This included control of a new third campus, a blacks-only medical school, in the face of interference from the apartheid government. The administrative centre of gravity shifted inexorably towards Durban as student enrolments and course options increased in the larger city. In addition to other sources the author draws extensively on the university archives of publications, reports, documents, reminiscences and minutes of meetings, recalling both the serious as well as the lighter side of campus life.

The essential historical reference on British warships—fully revised. “Right at the top of the ‘must have’ list . . . A book which will get much use ” (Royal Navy and Maritime Book Reviews). This is the fourth fully revised edition of a book first published in 1970. This longevity is testimony to its enduring value as a reference work—indeed, “Colledge,” as the book is universally known, is still the first stop for anyone wanting more information on any British warship from the fifteenth century to the present day when only the name is known. Each entry gives concise details of dimensions, armament, and service dates, and its alphabetical and chronological arrangement makes it easy to track down the right ship—otherwise the Royal Navy’s tradition of reusing the same names can be misleading. When originally published, the second of the two volumes was devoted to minor fighting ships and hired and requisitioned vessels. For the third edition, published in one volume, this material was omitted, but for this edition, all the genuine fighting ships—like the numbered Coastal Forces craft—have been restored, resulting in a convenient but comprehensive single-volume listing of all significant vessels. Since the death of Jim Colledge, who was widely respected for his pioneering research on the technical details of warships, his magnum opus has been updated, corrected, and expanded with similar enthusiasm and attention to detail by Ben Warlow, a retired naval officer and author of a number of books in the field. “An amazing and immensely valuable work of dedicated and persistent research.” —Baird Maritime
