Excerpt from Steep Trails The papers brought together in this volume have, in a general way, been arranged in chronological sequence. They span a period of twenty-nine years of Muir's life, during which they appeared as letters and articles, for the most part in publications of limited and local circulation. The Utah and Nevada sketches, and the two San Gabriel papers, were contributed, in the form of letters, to the San Francisco Evening Bulletin toward the end of the seventies. Written in the field, they preserve the freshness of the author's first impressions of those regions. Much of the material in the chapters on Mount Shasta first took similar shape in 1874. Subsequently it was rewritten and much expanded for inclusion in Picturesque California, and the Region West of the Rocky Mountains, which Muir began to edit in 1888. In the same work appeared the description of Washington and Oregon. The charming little essay "Wild Wool" was written for the Overland Monthly in 1875. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Excerpt from They of the High Trails M am Travelled Roads was composed, for the reason that I went to the High Country as to a summer playground. If a little of this joyousness of spirit inheres in the following pages, I am content to have it so, for the later mood is precisely as authentic as the other. The writing of the book was mainly done during 1905 and 1910. That I am less the reformer, less militant in this volume, I cheerfully admit. To maintain such a mood as that in which my first books were written after the conditions of its genesis had changed, would have been false and foolish. From the heat and dust and toil of the plain I went year after year to the glorious streams of the lofty valleys where only horsemen lived, men who took chances every day, and whose women, lonely though they were, had at least the compensation of the never-ending drama of cloud and peak. It was a recreation to ride these trails. I did not search for material - it came to me. I took delight in writing these stories and many readers have testified that they, too, enjoyed them. I glory in them and I am asking my readers to put them on the shelf along with the two volumes of M am Travelled Roads, as a complementary volume. I assure them that in all my tales of the mountains I worked in the same spirit of verity as that with which I earlier wrote. My material is more romantic in these later books, but my method remains substantially the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Open Trails Like all the sons of Adam, the Padre has his ways. He will not talk when I want to. He loiters on smooth ground and drives furiously where it is rough. He has a polite way of hinting that I take all the rug and three-quarters of the seat. I may mention, in this connection, that his politeness is so unassailable that, in comparison with it, other people's fury would only be as balm of Gilead. Nevertheless, as I saunter out to the stables, I settle it in my mind that I will be placid all the way. Nothing, absolutely nothing, shall upset my equanimity on this trip. Excerpt from The Blazed Trail So Radway got the descriptions and a little map divided into townships, sections, and quarter sec tions; and went out to look at it. He searched until he found a blaze on a tree, the marking on which indicated it as the corner of a section. F rom this cor ner the boundary lines were blazed at right angles in either direction. Radway followed the blazed lines. Thus he was able accurately to locate isolated for ties (forty acres), eighties, quarter sections, and sections in a primeval wilderness. The feat, however, required considerable woodcraft, an exact sense of di rection, and a pocket compass. These resources were still further drawn upon for the next task. Radway tramped the woods, hills, and valleys to determine the most practical route over which to build a logging road from the standing tim ber to the shores of Cass Branch. He found it to be an affair of some puzzlement. The pines stood on a country rolling with hills, deep with pot-holes. It be came necessary to dodge in and out, here and there, between the knolls, around or through the swamps, still keeping, however, the same general direction, and preserving always the requisite level or down grade. Radway had no vantage point from which to survey. The country. A city man would promptly have lost himself in the tangle; but the woodsman emerged at last on the banks of the stream, leaving behind him a meandering trail of clipped trees that wound, twisted, doubled, and turned, but kept ever to a coun try without steep hills. From the main road he pur posed arteries to tap the most distant parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
