In Goodbye, Status Quo, visionary scientist and leading entrepreneur Dr. Joan Fallon equips readers with the tools to overcome obstacles and become agents of change—as entrepreneurs, leaders, and individuals. In Goodbye, Status Quo, Dr. Joan Fallon equips her readers with the tools to be agents of change: as entrepreneurs, leaders, and individuals. No matter where you come from or who you are, you can be an agent of change. If you are setting out to change the world—great, she affirms—just keep in mind that change must start with you. As a company founder, Dr. Fallon faced many obstacles. Some of the greatest ones came from how other people saw her. A woman in her fifties with a warm, approachable manner, she didn’t fit the typical entrepreneur profile. Now as a respected business leader, doctor, and academic who sits on the boards of numerous non-profits and is frequently asked to mentor others, Joan is driven to share what she has learned and the perspectives that brought her success. She is also fascinated by the subject of change. What are the impediments that keep leaders and individuals from changing the world, or even just changing themselves, and how can they be overcome? What is it about you that holds you, your job, or your company back from changing? Joan Fallon believes that deductive reasoning in addition to the typical inductive reasoning and other science-based approaches allow us to move past the reactive responses that leave us stuck, unable to innovate and make change. Fear-based thinking rules in many sectors today—in business, politics, even relationships. And fear is the fundamental factor that holds us back from embracing change. Goodbye, Status Quo blends lessons from Joan’s own entrepreneurial experiences and scientific observations to give readers informative and actionable advice on the topics of entrepreneurship, innovation, and making change. Each chapter offers pithy advice that taps into business, medicine, philosophy, and even baseball. No matter your background, experience, or personal struggles, you can change the world—if you are willing to first change yourself.

Every song on every album by the classic line-up dissected and discussedThe stories behind the songs, their context within the parent albums and the times they were written and recordedThe release date of every single and B-side trackWhat the band and critics had/have to say about their musical development After their initial inception as a schoolboy band in 1962, and following a number of band name and personnel changes, Status Quo eventually hit the charts in 1968 with the massive hit single ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’. However, it was not until they ditched their psychedelic duds and took on the denim, accompanied by a radical gearshift from teenage-friendly pop to out-and-out electric boogie, that they came into their own, defining the rock music genre for many throughout the Seventies. A raft of hugely successful albums followed that are still held in awe by an army of loyal fans; the release of Piledriver in 1972 heralded a purple patch in which twelve consecutive long-players charted in the UK Top 10. The classic ‘Frantic Four’ line-up of Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster and Coghlan started to disintegrate in 1981 and eventually imploded in 1985. Although they have gone on to post over sixty UK chart hits in six separate decades, Status Quo: Song by Song focuses on those days of glory from their earliest recordings until the demise of the classic line-up.

Status Quo were one of the most successful, influential and innovative bands of the 1970s. During the first half of the decade, they wrote, recorded and performed a stream of inventive and highly complex rock compositions, developed 12 bar forms and techniques in new and fascinating ways, and affected important musical and cultural trends. But, despite global success on stage and in the charts, they were maligned by the UK music press, who often referred to them as lamebrained three-chord wonders, and shunned by the superstar Disk Jockeys of the era, who refused to promote their music. As a result, Status Quo remain one of the most misunderstood and underrated bands in the history of popular music. Cope redresses that misconception through a detailed study of the band’s music and live performances, related musical and cultural subtopics and interviews with key band members. The band is reinstated as a serious, artistic and creative phenomenon of the 1970s scene and shown to be vital contributors to the evolution of rock.

Explaining why some states seek the status quo and others seek revision in international relations, Davidson argues that governments pursuing revisionist policies are responding to powerful domestic groups, such as nationalists and those in the military, that believe they can defeat their rivals. He draws on examples of France, Italy and Great Britain to enhance understanding of a fundamental source of instability in international affairs.

A public school principal’s account of the courageous leaders who have dismantled the tracking systems in their schools in order to desegregate classrooms What would happen if a school eliminated the “tracks” that rank students based on their perceived intellectual abilities? Would low-achieving students fall behind and become frustrated? Would their higher-achieving peers suffer from a “watered-down” curriculum? Or is tracking itself the problem? A growing body of research shows that tracking doesn’t increase learning for the minority and low-income students who are overrepresented in low-track classrooms. This de facto segregation has led many civil rights advocates to argue that tracking is turning back the clock on equal education. As a principal at a New York high school, Carol Corbett Burris believed that the curriculum for the best students was the best curriculum for all. She helped lead a bold plan to eliminate tracking from her school, and the results couldn’t have been further from the doom-and-gloom scenarios of tracking proponents. Instead, there was a dramatic improvement in the achievement of all students, across racial and socioeconomic divisions, and a near elimination of the achievement gap. Today, due to those efforts, International Baccalaureate English is the twelfth-grade curriculum for South Side students, and all students take the same challenging courses, together, to prepare them for college. In On the Same Track, Burris draws on her own experience, on the experiences of other schools, and on the latest research to make an impassioned case for detracking. Not only does the practice of tracking fail to benefit lower-tracked students, as Burris shows, but it also results in the resegregation of classrooms. Furthermore, she argues that many of today’s popular reforms emanate from the same “sort and select” mentality that reinforces social stratification based on race and class. On the Same Track is a rousing, controversial, and yet optimistic account of how we need to change our assumptions and policies if we are to live up to the promise of democratic public education. Only by holding all students to the same high standards can we ensure that all have the same opportunity to live up to their full potential.

The 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have made the authorities to increasingly turn inward and use ethnocentrism, protectionism, and top-down approaches to guide policy on trade, competition, and industrial development. The continuing aftereffects of such policies range from the rise and seeming success of authoritarian states, rise of populist and protectionist trends, and evolving academic agendas inspiring the reemergence of top-down industrial policies across the world. This open access edited volume contains contributions from over 30 scholars with expertise in economics, innovation, management, and economic history. The chapters offer unique theoretical and empirical contributions discussing topics such as how industrial policies affect risk, incentives, and information for investments. They also address the policy perspectives on new technologies such as AI and its implications for market entry, the role for independent entrepreneurship in increasingly regulated markets, and whether governments should focus on market interventions or institutional capacity-building. Questioning the Entrepreneurial State initiates a much sought-after debate on the notion of an Entrepreneurial State. It discusses the dangers of top-down approaches to industrial policy, examines lessons from such approaches for future policy design, and calls attention to the progress of open and contestable markets in a sound economy and society. “Creative destruction, innovation and entrepreneurship are at the core of economic growth. The government has a clear role, to provide the basic fabric of a dynamic society, but industrial policy and state-owned companies are the boulevard of broken dreams and unrealized visions. This important message is convincingly stated in Questioning the Entrepreneurial State.” Anders Borg, former Minister of Finance, Sweden “Misreading the dynamism of American entrepreneurship, European intellectuals and policy makers have embraced a dangerous fantasy: catching up requires constructing an entrepreneurial state. This book provides a vital antidote: The entrepreneur comes first: The state may support. It cannot lead.” Amar Bhidé, Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of International Business, Tufts University “This important new book subjects the emergence of the entrepreneurial state, which reflects a shift in the locus of entrepreneurship from the individual to the public sector, to the scrutiny of rigorous analysis. The resulting concerns, flaws and biases inherent in the entrepreneurial state exposed are both alarming and sobering. The skill and scholarly craftsmanship brought to bear in this crucial analysis is evident throughout the book, along with the even, but ultimately consequential thinking of the authors. A must read for researchers and thought leaders in business and policy." David Audtretsch, Distinguished Professor, Ameritech Chair of Economic Development, Indiana University
