This report presents information regarding the staff, students, degrees conferred, income, expenditures, endowment, and physical plant facilities of the land-grant colleges and universities, for the academic year 1950-51. The facts are presented both for the individual institutions, and for the Nation as a whole. The present report, required by law, continues the series of annual reports which had their beginning with the establishment of the land-grant colleges in 1862. Through this series of annual reports, the reader is provided with factual information on the growth and progress of the land-grant institutions of the Nation. The land-grant institutions occupy a significant place in American higher education, both from the point of view of cultural influence and of number of students served. In the academic year 1950-51, the land-grant colleges and universities enrolled 18 percent of all students attending institutions of higher education, and 25 percent of the students in publicly controlled institutions. The land-grant institutions conferred nearly 25 percent of all earned degrees. (Contains 21 tables and 3 footnotes.) [This bulletin was prepared in consultation with Frederick J. Kelly. This is the final annual report of the 69 land-grant institutions for the year ended June 30, 1950. The institutions here reported are called land-grant colleges and universities because public land were grated to the States for their establishment or support. Some highlighted findings include: (1) Staff--There was an increase of 5.1 percent in the total number of full-time staff members in institutions for "white" students, and a 10.3 percent increase in staff in institutions for Negroes; (2) Students--The 1949-50 total enrollment of all students in the regular session in the institutions for white students shows a decrease under 1948-49 of 2.9 percent, while in the 17 institutions for Negroes, the decrease was 1.2%; (3) Degrees--The total number of degrees conferred in all fields increased above 1948-49, with the exception of women's bachelor's and first professional degrees, in which there was a decrease of 4.9 percent; (4) Income--In the 52 white institutions the total educational and general income for 1949-50 increased 6.5 percent over the income for 1948-49; (5) Expenditures--Total expenditures for educational and general expenses in the 52 white institutions increased 6.5 percent over the previous year, while total expenditures in the 17 institutions for Negroes increased 11.7 percent; and (6) Federal Funds--The total amount received from Federal funds decreased more than 13 million dollars from 1948-49, a decrease of 7.7 percent which is largely accounted for by the decrease in funds from the Veterans' Administration for student fees. (Contains 20 tables and 1 footnote.) [Prepared in consultation with Frederick J. Kelly. Best copy available has been provided.].
