Department of Agriculture, is responsible for the protection and development of about 186 million acres of mountains, forests, waterways, and grazing lands grouped within 154 National Forests and 19 National Grasslands. The principal objective of the Forest Service is to manage the resources on these Federal lands for the greatest good of the greatest number in the long run. To accomplish this, the National Forests must be made to yield continuous supplies of water, timber, forage, and wildlife, as well as to provide recreation opportunities for the millions of people who visit them.
