Everyone knows Mrs Danvers as a byword for menace in Hitchcock's Rebecca and as a poster girl for lesbians in the movies. But only dedicated fans know her brilliant creator. This book tells Judith Anderson's life story for the first time. It recovers her career as one of the great stars of stage and television and an important character actress in film. Born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1897, brought up by a determined single mother, she parlayed her rich, velvety voice and ability to give reality to strong emotional roles into stardom on Broadway in the 1920s. Not a conventional beauty, she was alluring, with her beautiful body, perfect dress sense, and striking, volatile personality. After playing glamorous roles, she was recognised as a Leading Lady of the American Stage under the direction of Guthrie McClintic in Hamlet and co-starring with Laurence Olivier and Maurice Evans in Macbeth. Her reputation as a great actress was confirmed by her landmark performance in 1947 in the ancient Greek Medea, adapted for her by her friend, poet Robinson Jeffers. In a long career, she appeared in Medea again in 1982 at the age of 85, playing the Nurse to fellow-Australian Zoe Caldwell's Medea. Ambitious and driven, Anderson toured extensively, made numerous highly praised appearances on television, and, after her unforgettable role as Mrs Danvers, was a sought-after character actress in film, playing her last role as Vulcan High Priestess in Star Trek III at the age of 87. She won many awards and was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1960 and Companion of the Order of Australia just before her death in 1992. She had a stormy private life and two short marriages, which, she remarked, were 'much too long.'

In this entertaining backstage tour, Graeme Blundell has selected almost three hundred anecdotes about Australian theatre from its rather sordid origins in the 1790s to the more celebrated age of Barry Humphries, Wendy Harmer and John Bell. Drawn from newspapers, magazines, biographies, memoirs, and historical works, the anecdotes are arranged chronologically and contain reminiscences of all the great figures of the Australian stage: George Coppin, J.C. Williamson, Nellie Melba, Gladys Moncrieff, Roy Rene ('Mo'), Gwen Plumb, PeterFinch, Ray Barrett, Frank Thring, Noel Ferrier, June Slater, Gordon Chater, David Williamson, and Reg Livermore. Overseas artists have also been drawn to the Australian stage, and several of them drift through these pages - Lola Montez, Charles Kean, Sarah Bernhardt, and Noel Coward. (Asked at theairport if he had anything to say to the Sydney Sun, the Master said simply 'Shine'.) Ending with Barry Humphries' caustic account of the opening night of the operatic version of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and with Barrie Kosky's notorious attack on the current state of Australian culture, this is a memorable and spirited celebration of Australian theatre.

Whether it was Jane Campion's The Piano, Mel Gibson in Mad Max, Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee, or The Lord of the Rings saga, we have all experienced the cinema of Australia and New Zealand. This book is an introduction and guide to the film of Australia and New Zealand. With entries on many exceptional producers, directors, writers and actors, as well as the films indicated above and many others, this reference also presents the early pioneers, the film companies and government bodies, and much more in its hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries. Through a chronology that shows how far these cinemas have come in a short time and an introduction that presents them more broadly, a clear portrait of the two countries' motion pictures emerge. The bibliography is an excellent source for further reading.

Filmmakers have honed their skills and many have achieved critical and popular success at home and abroad, as have actors and other crew. American filmmakers and companies have found it cheaper to make films in Australia because wages and salaries are lower, tax rebates have been attractive and the expertise in most areas of filmmaking is comparable to that of anywhere in the world. At the same time, Australian audiences still enjoy watching Australian films, making some of them profitable, even if this is a small profit when considered in Hollywood terms. New Zealand filmmakers, cast and crew have shown that they are equal to the world’s best in making films with international themes, while other films have shown that the world is interested in New Zealand narratives and settings. Increased support for Maori filmmakers and stories has had a significant impact on production levels and on the diversity of stories that now reach the screen. It has also helped create more viable career paths for those who continue to be based in their home country. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Australian and New Zealand Cinema contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on leading films as well as many directors, writers, actors and producers. It also covers early pioneers, film companies, genres and government bodies.

Australian actors are now taking their place on the international stage, becoming regulars among the nominees and winners of major international acting awards. They are famously indifferent to the honing of their skills outside of the actual workplace... this book is a response to a nagging feeling I've had for many years that Australian actors are making it up as they go along...' (Terence Crawford). So what is it about the approach, technique and focus of the Australian actor that has the entertainment world's favour and respect? How do our best actors do what they do? 'Trade Secrets' is a fascinating examination of the acting processes of fourteen of Australia's finest actors and will feature interviews with: Paula Arundell, Bille Brown, Helen Buday, Joel Edgerton, Judi Farr, John Gaden, Paul Goddard, Robert Grubb, Wendy Hughes, Heather Mitchell, Sean O'Shea, Pamela Rabe, Geoffrey Rush and Charles 'Bud' Tingwell. Each chapter gives an overview of the actors' life, training, inspiration and reputation followed by an extensive interview with them about their craft and how they approach it.
