Denise has always been the apple of her father's eye. She keeps her head down, she works hard, and she studies harder. She is taught at an early age that you perpetually give your best. Denise is a young lady who lives an ordinary, dull life. One day, she meets a guy who blows her away. Over time, she falls in love. Ever since then, her life becomes chaos. His name is Winston. However, everyone knows him as J.R. He has been in the street life since his preteens with no plans of getting out. J.R. has a son, whom he doesn't know about until the child is two years old. When he does find out, he thinks it is best to hide his son from Denise. He falls in love with her from the first time he lays eyes on her. Denise is eventually kidnapped. The only thing that gives her some piece is knowing he is looking for her. Denise is very reserved, very strong-willed, and very independent. These very well may be the only things that will keep her alive throughout this endeavor. Winston needs them to see he is not a child but a grown man at fourteen. He must go in hard on every job. He must be better. He must be smarter, and more importantly, he must be faster than the best in the set to be taken seriously. Things in his crew start to fall apart. As an alternative to trying to keep it together, he chooses for once to put himself first and to search for the woman who has given him purpose. His soul mate is taken on his watch, and he will set out to take her back. Everyone who is involved will pay with their lives.

"An inside view of the Lakota world-of the meaning of Lakota song and dance, of their history, of what it is to be Lakota in America today. . . . A lasting personal tribute to the Lakota way of living."-Whole Earth Review. "A unique, in-depth presentation on Lakota music and the profession of singer, a useful contemporary Oglala representation of the core of their culture, and a version of the involvement of the American Indian Movement on Pine Ridge Reservation, told by a man who was affiliated but not a principal leader. . . . This is a subjective statement, well and persuasively written."-Choice. Severt Young Bear stood in the light-in the center ring at powwows and other gatherings of Lakota people. As founder and, for many years, lead singer of the Porcupine Singers, a traditional singing and drumming group, he also stood, figuratively, in the light of understanding the cherished Lakota heritage. Young Bear's own life in Brotherhood Community, Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation, is the linchpin of this narrative, which ranges across the landscape of Dakota culture, from the significance of names to the search for modern Lakota identity, from Lakota oral traditions to powwows and giveaways, from child-rearing practices to humor and leadership. "Music is at the center of Lakota life, " says Young Bear; he describes in rich detail the origins and varieties of Lakota song and dance. Severt Young Bear performed with the Porcupine Singers throughout North America, taught at Oglala Lakota College, and served on the Oglala Sioux tribal council. He was music and dance consultant for the films Dances with Wolves and Thunder Heart. This book is the fruit of his longfriendship and collaboration with R. D. Theisz, a fellow Porcupine Singer and professor of communications and education at Black Hills State University.

"This book is a selection of historic photographs of American Indians by Edward Sheriff Curtis, with each photograph accompanied by an appropriate verse, poem, song, or prose from the associated tribe. There are ten tribes featured in the book. While there were many photographs taken of American Indians beginning in the 1860s, very few match Curtis's quality and beauty. Between 1900 and 1927, Curtis would visit eighty different tribes, travelling from the U.S.-Mexico border to the Arctic Circle, from the Great Plains to the Pacific Coast. He would take over 40,000 photographs, record songs and stories, interview famous tribal leaders, and produce a full-length silent film of the Kwakiutl people. The interviews Curtis conducted with individuals give incredible insight into their lives. His biographical sketches and personal observations of ceremonies and daily life of American Indians are unequalled. While the photographs are beautiful and works of art, they also serve a greater purpose. They allow American Indians of today to look back on a way of life their ancestors experienced, as well as give some of them the ability to see pictures of their relatives that would have been nonexistent if not for Edward S. Curtis. The beautiful words accompanying the photos are the prayers, songs, and wisdom of the American Indian tribes included in this book. They give voice to the artistic photographs. Wisdom comes from teachings through stories and instruction. From father to son, mother to daughter, and grandparents to grandchildren, ancient stories are handed down through generations. The words in this collection give the reader a respect and understanding for the philosophy and ideals of these tribal cultures and an appreciation for their love of the natural world"--
