The proceedings of the 4th Stability and Control Processes Conference are focused on modern applied mathematics, stability theory, and control processes. The conference was held in recognition of the 90th birthday of Professor Vladimir Ivanovich Zubov (1930–2000). This selection of papers reflects the wide-ranging nature of V. I. Zubov’s work, which included contributions to the development of the qualitative theory of differential equations, the theory of rigid body motion, optimal control theory, and the theory of electromagnetic fields. It helps to advance many aspects of the theory of control systems, including questions of motion stability, nonlinear oscillations in control systems, navigation and reliability of control devices, vibration theory, and quantization of orbits. The disparate applications covered by the book – in mechanical systems, game theory, solid-state physics, socio-economic systems and medical and biological systems, control automata and navigation – are developments from Professor Zubov’s in-depth studies on the theory of stability of motion, the theory of automatic control and the theory of the motions of optimal processes. Stability and Control Processes presents research continuing the legacy of V. I. Zubov and updates it with sections focused on intelligence-based control. These proceedings will be of interest to academics, professionals working in industry and researchers alike.

This book presents the proceedings of the International Conference “Stability, Control, Differential Games” (SCDG2019, September 16 – 20, 2019, Yekaterinburg, Russia), organized by the Krasovskii Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Discussing the latest advances in the theory of optimal control, stability theory and differential games, it also demonstrates the application of new techniques and numerical algorithms to solve problems in robotics, mechatronics, power and energy systems, economics and ecology. Further, the book includes fundamental results in control theory, stability theory and differential games presented at the conference, as well as a number of chapters focusing on novel approaches in solving important applied problems in control and optimization. Lastly, it evaluates recent major accomplishments, and forecasts developments in various up-and-coming areas, such as hybrid systems, model predictive control, Hamilton–Jacobi equations and advanced estimation algorithms.

Professor J. P. LaSalle died on July 7, 1983 at the age of 67. The present book is being published posthumously with the careful assistance of Kenneth Meyer, one of the students of Professor LaSalle. It is appropriate that the last publi cation of Professor LaSalle should be on a subject which con tains many interesting ideas, is very useful in applications and can be understood at an undergraduate level. In addition to making many significant contributions at the research level to differential equations and control theory, he was an excel lent teacher and had the ability to make sophisticated con cepts appear to be very elementary. Two examples of this are his books with N. Hasser and J. Sullivan on analysis published by Ginn and Co. , 1949 and 1964, and the book with S. Lefschetz on stability by Liapunov's second method published by Academic Press, 1961. Thus, it is very fitting that the present volume could be completed. Jack K. Hale Kenneth R. This book presents a modern and self-contained treatment of the Liapunov method for stability analysis, in the framework of mathematical nonlinear control theory. A Particular focus is on the problem of the existence of Liapunov functions (converse Liapunov theorems) and their regularity, whose interest is especially motivated by applications to automatic control. Many recent results in this area have been collected and presented in a systematic way. Some of them are given in extended, unified versions and with new, simpler proofs. In the 2nd edition of this successful book several new sections were added and old sections have been improved, e.g., about the Zubovs method, Liapunov functions for discontinuous systems and cascaded systems. Many new examples, explanations and figures were added making this book accessible and well readable for engineers as well as mathematicians.

Finite-time stability (FTS) is a more practical concept than classical Lyapunov stability, useful for checking whether the state trajectories of a system remain within pre-specified bounds over a finite time interval. In a linear systems framework, FTS problems can be cast as convex optimization problems and solved by the use of effective off-the-shelf computational tools such as LMI solvers. Finite-time Stability and Control exploits this benefit to present the practical applications of FTS and finite-time control-theoretical results to various engineering fields. The text is divided into two parts: · linear systems; and · hybrid systems. The building of practical motivating examples helps the reader to understand the methods presented. Finite-time Stability and Control is addressed to academic researchers and to engineers working in the field of robust process control. Instructors teaching graduate courses in advanced control will also find parts of this book useful for their courses.
