Excerpt from High Grade Bulbs and Seeds for Fall Planting, 1898 The growing of bulbs, other than the charms their flowers possess, has many ad vantages over that of any other class of flowering plants, among others, and a very great one, is that many of them produce their flowers in very early Spring, at a season when few other plants are in blossom. At this season, in a sheltered, sunny spot, a few clumps of Snow-drops, Crocus, Scillas, will present a mass of color, in graceful forms, while the snow yet lingers in shaded places; before these are gone the Hyacinths refresh us with their grateful fragrance these are soon followed by the Narcissus and Early Tulips, and all before vegetation is fairly started In rapid succession follow the gorgeous Parrot Tulips, Crown Imperials, and before these are gone the Lilies commence their long succession of bloom. Interspersed with these is a host of other bulbs, equally valuable for their flowers, but whose names are rarely mention ed. Excerpt from Bulbs, Seeds, Roses: Fall, 1951 It would be difficult to make a better investment in any flowering bulbs than in Narcissi, or Daffo dils, as they are frequently known. Their season begins extremely early and lasts until quite late. As cut flowers they have few equals. Cul ture is the easiest possible. Plant in any good garden soil covering to a depth of about one and one half to twice the height of the bulb measuring from base to shoulder. Early planting is advisable how ever, many fine flowers are pro ducea from plantings made after the first of February. Narcissi multiply quite freely and should be taken up during summer or early fall about every 3 or 4 years and replanted. Excerpt from Flowering Bulbs for Fall Planting, 1925 Although less graceful than the lily, the Hyacinth is still Queen of the Dutch Bulbs, and is the most familiar of them all. It is perfect in form, of beautiful coloring, and carries its burden of fragrant bells with a stateliness characteristic of no other small flower. It does equally as well indoors as in the garden, and can be grown in fiber, water, sand, or soil. When grown in sand or soil it should be enriched with bone meal or sheep manure: For indoor blooming, it is best to plant the bulbs in Prepared Bulb Fiber, and bring them to the light at intervals of ten days or two weeks, for a succession of bloom. The bulbs should be planted from 4 to 6 inches deep and about 6 inches apart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
