Excerpt from Spiritual Studies in St. Mark's Gospel, Vol. 1 Isaac Williams says Now commences the general account of our Lord's public ministry; but St. Matthew and St. Mark introduce it with no reference to the incidents mentioned by St. Luke, or to the previous circumstances in St. John; but merely of our Lord thus preaching after St. John was cast into prison. Very striking and awful are these frequent allusions to times and seasons in the Gospels, M y time is not yet come, and the time is fulfilled, new is the accepted time. For thus to the Church at large, to every Church, to every individual, there is a time, the appointed day, after which the door w shut, the things belonging to their peace are hidden; the night cometh. Swete comments as follows: 'both proclama tions, that of St. John Baptist, and that of our Lord, urged repentance, and both told of good tidings, but repentance predominated m the one. Excerpt from Spiritual Studies in St. Mark's Gospel, Vol. 3 And Swete: The first slave is let go after his beating, but without that which he had come for, empty-handed. The second met with worse usage. He was not put to death the f ate of the one who followed him - but grossly insulted by being knocked about the head; in this and other ways they heaped con tumely upon him. From insult the husband men proceeded on the next occasion to murder; and so matters went on for a long time, each servant who was sent suffering death or mal treatment at their hands. The Gospel of Mark is the second of the four canonical gospels and of the three synoptic Gospels. It tells of the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death, burial, and the discovery of his empty tomb. There is no miraculous birth or doctrine of divine pre-existence, nor, in the original ending (Mark 16:1–8), any post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. It portrays Jesus as a teacher, an exorcist, a healer, and a miracle worker. He refers to himself as the Son of Man. He is called the Son of God, but keeps his messianic nature secret; even his disciples fail to understand him. All this is in keeping with Christian interpretation of prophecy, which is believed to foretell the fate of the messiah as a suffering servant. The gospel ends, in its original version, with the discovery of the empty tomb, a promise to meet again in Galilee, and an unheeded instruction to spread the good news of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Noted biblical scholar Elizabeth Struthers Malbon asks a literary question in this landmark volume: how does the Markan narrative characterise Jesus? Through a close narrative analysis, she carefully examines various ways the Gospel discloses its central character. The result is a multi-layered Markan narrative christology, focusing not only on what the narrator and other characters say about Jesus (pro-jected christology), but also on what Jesus says in response to what these others say to and about him (deflected christology), what Jesus says instead about himself and God (refracted christology), what Jesus does (enacted christology), and how what other characters do is related to what Jesus says and does (reflected christology). Holding significant implications for those who wish to use Mark's Gospel to make claims about the historical Jesus, as well as for those who wish to use Mark's Gospel to construct confessions about the church's belief, Malbon's research is a groundbreaking work of scholarship.
