Excerpt from Spiritual Guidance in the Experience of the Society of Friends I propose in the first place to refer brie y to the development of the Catholic idea of the church, - outward, visible, universal, - and to the change effected by the Reformation in re moving the seat of religious authority from without to within, from the church to the Christian consciousness. The systematising of Protestantism has then to be alluded to, by way of preface to the vital experience which led Fox and the Friends to emphasise the authority of the Light within. My chief aim is to examine the strength and weakness of this position as shown in the early history of Friends, and to trace the hardening processes by which spiritual guidance became confined even in a church which based itself upon this guidance. Certain lessons of importance, not only to the Society of Friends but to the church at large, result from the experience of the past, and I have accordingly ventured a restatement of the question of spiritual guidance in the light of this experience and from the intellectual standpoint of the present day. The unique witness of Friends on this subject and the rich suggestiveness of their experience should give this chapter of church history an interest to a wide circle of Christians. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Excerpt from The Past, Present and Future of the Society of Friends In a measure of that love which would gather all from their outward wanderings in search of the living among the dead, to the inward life and saving power of Truth, I would affectionately call our attention to that living way wherein our worthy forefathers were led to blessedness and peace, as well as to some of the causes which have operated in producing our lapsed condition, as a religious people professing, above all others, a quiet waiting, and humble dependence upon the enlivening, enlightening power of divine grace; which, it is testified, hath appeared to all men, as their in* ward, spiritual teacher, monitor, and guide. It was their faithfulness to this essential duty of humble, dependent waiting upon God, that Christ his dear Son might be made unto them wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, that made our worthy forefathers that mighty power for good, in turning men from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, which characterized them, as they truly were, the friends of truth; for they were united in the one faith, which works by love to the purifying of the heart, unto, and in co-operation with, the great and holy Head of the living church, who wrought m and through them, both to will and to do of his own good pleasure. Excerpt from The Principles of the Religious Society of Friends and Some of Its Testimonies In sending forth this little book to the public, the writer has been actuated by no other motive or desire than to answer the many inquiries which come to him from time to time, both from those who are, and those who are not members of the Society of Friends, as to what Quakerism is; and realizing the need of answering these inquiries with such explanations as shall appeal to the thought and culture of the day, he has been induced under an apprehension of duty to write out that which his own conviction and experience have taught him to be the truth regarding it. Hence, he has endeavored to give expression to his thought upon this subject, in a form of language which he hopes will convince the rational under standing and judgment of his readers, from their present standpoint of culture, that they are practical and true, and capable of an adaptation to the spiritual needs of man, with a perfect confidence that theexperience of human life will confirm every position he has taken. With the humble hope that it may remove doubts from some minds, strengthen the convictions of others, and that all who read it may come nearer to the Divine Spirit, in thought, in hope, and in true spiritual life in the present state of existence, and strengthen the assurance that as each one lives in close obedience to the law written in the heart, there awaits us in the eternal life a glorious welcome to the Heavenly Father's mansions, he sends it forth on its mission of love and good will to men.
