Excerpt from Speech of the Hon. Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, on the Barbarism of Slavery: Delivered in the U. S. Senate, June 4th, 1860; Also, the Republican Platform The barbarism of slavery appears first, in the character of slavery, and secondly, in the char acter of slave masters. Under the first head we shall naturally consider (1) the law of slant very and its origin, and (2) the practical results of slavery, as shown in a comparison between the free States and the slave States. Under the second head we shall naturally consider (1) slave masters as shown in the law of slavery; (2) slave masters in their relation with slaves, here glancing at their three brutal instruments; and (3) slave masters in their relations with each other, with society, and with government; and (4) slave masters in their unconsciousness. The way will then be prepared for the con sideration of the assumption of constitutional law. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Speech of Hon. Charles Sumner, on the bill for the admission of Kansas as a free state, in the United States Senate, June 4, 1860: In the debate over whether new states and territories should be free or slaveholding, few spoke more passionately than Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner. In this speech, delivered before the Senate in 1860 when Kansas applied for statehood, Sumner makes clear his abolitionist stance. Decrying slavery as barbaric, he criticizes various pro-slavery arguments and offers statistics to show how, in his opinion, slavery rendered the South economically inferior to the North.
