This deliciously entertaining and humorous chapter book gets top marks for presenting a delightfully quirky day in the life of an eight-year-old boy with Asperger's Syndrome. Being eight, Connor knew a lot. He knew that Mrs. Winters did not like to be interrupted, but he was sure she would appreciate his fact-finding methods—and who wouldn' t want to know more about geckos? He knew he needed the new library book, "More All About Dogs," more than Jane needed to keep sitting on that stool—and he only nudged her off so he could reach it. On a day when everything seemed to go wrong, Connor turned out to be the only one who could save the school from a dog-caused Code Yellow! Told from the point of view of a child with Asperger Syndrome, author Jodi Carmichael highlights some of the challenges—and triumphs—of experiencing a day at school from a different perspective. Heartwarming, funny, and charmingly illustrated, Spaghetti is NOT a Finger Food is the winner of four awards: The Mom' s Choice Gold Award; The Moonbeam Best First Book Award; The Professionals Network Recognition of Merit; and The IBPA Benjamin Franklin Silver Digital Award.

Can I get a “ramen” from the congregation?! Behold the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), today’s fastest growing carbohydrate-based religion. According to church founder Bobby Henderson, the universe and all life within it were created by a mystical and divine being: the Flying Spaghetti Monster. What drives the FSM’ s devout followers, a.k.a. Pastafarians? Some say it’s the assuring touch from the FSM’s “noodly appendage.” Then there are those who love the worship service, which is conducted in pirate talk and attended by congregants in dashing buccaneer garb. Still others are drawn to the Church’s flimsy moral standards, religious holidays every Friday, or the fact that Pastafarian heaven is way cooler: Does your heaven have a Stripper Factory and a Beer Volcano? Intelligent Design has finally met its match—and it has nothing to do with apes or the Olive Garden of Eden. Within these pages, Bobby Henderson outlines the true facts– dispelling such malicious myths as evolution (“only a theory”), science (“only a lot of theories”), and whether we’re really descended from apes (fact: Humans share 95 percent of their DNA with chimpanzees, but they share 99.9 percent with pirates!) See what impressively credentialed top scientists have to say: “If Intelligent Design is taught in schools, equal time should be given to the FSM theory and the non-FSM theory.” –Professor Douglas Shaw, Ph.D. “Do not be hypocritical. Allow equal time for other alternative ‘theories’ like FSMism, which is by far the tastier choice.” –J. Simon, Ph.D. “In my scientific opinion, when comparing the two theories, FSM theory seems to be more valid than classic ID theory.” –Afshin Beheshti, Ph.D. Read the book and decide for yourself!

This collection of poems is organized in four sections that depict the chronological evolution of my emotional states. Sections and poems can be read in any order at readers' preferences. The first section, entitled "Waves from Lost Connections" was inspired by the painful state of a wounded soul under the blow of the unexpected departure of a presumed life partner who, after vowing to be there for richer or for poorer, in health and in sickness, could not keep that vow. Feelings of deep unhappiness and sadness received from the vibes of lost connections are expressed here as a cathartic attempt to heal body, mind and soul. This section is especially appropriate for those with a craving for a healthy dose of melancholia for healing purposes. The second section under the title "Blossoms of Found Connections" expresses the newly found, uplifting state of the soul after it found its true missing half. Serene Feelings of a life full of hope and happiness are brought out here to celebrate the new found beatitude provided by the blossoms of found connections. This section is particularly beneficial to those who are ready to experience a rainbow of hope and happiness in the aftermath of an emotional storm. The third section entitled "Waves from Deeper Connections" is a natural extension of the previous one. Here, the ensuing journey in search of deeper connections is pursued to uplift and free the soul and spirit into higher dimensions of feelings beyond the human materialistic dimension. This section reaches further down into the body and soul connection. Section four entitled "Rays from the Inner and Outer Wor

2014 James Beard Foundation Book Award, Reference and Scholarship Honor Book for Nonfiction, Black Caucus of the American Library Association In this insightful and eclectic history, Adrian Miller delves into the influences, ingredients, and innovations that make up the soul food tradition. Focusing each chapter on the culinary and social history of one dish--such as fried chicken, chitlins, yams, greens, and "red drinks--Miller uncovers how it got on the soul food plate and what it means for African American culture and identity. Miller argues that the story is more complex and surprising than commonly thought. Four centuries in the making, and fusing European, Native American, and West African cuisines, soul food--in all its fried, pork-infused, and sugary glory--is but one aspect of African American culinary heritage. Miller discusses how soul food has become incorporated into American culture and explores its connections to identity politics, bad health raps, and healthier alternatives. This refreshing look at one of America's most celebrated, mythologized, and maligned cuisines is enriched by spirited sidebars, photographs, and twenty-two recipes.

Food for Mind, Body, Soul, and Spirit mixes together a collection of recipes that come from the kitchens of cooks who shared their creations with their church communities. Added to this bounty are devotions that reflect upon the challenges of daily living and the nourishment the Holy Spirit offers for surviving and thriving in the midst of life’s changes. The author, Mary Roberson, has brought together these two main ingredients—recipes and reflections—to create a guide for one’s eating that takes into account all of the aspects of the human creature: mind, body, soul, and spirit. In addition to the inspiration served up by the devotions and the invitation to cook enticing food provided by the recipes, the book seasons its offerings with a sprinkling of quips and quotes. Food for Mind, Body, Soul, and Spirit traces its roots to the collaboration of the author and her late husband, Hubert Roberson, who served as the minister of the congregations from which the recipes in this collection arose. Dedicated to his ministry and memory, Food for Mind, Body, Soul, and Spirit promises to deliver a healthy and enticing diet of food for all parts of one’s life and to leave the reader with a sense of spiritual and culinary satisfaction.
