Certainly the territorial disputes within the former Soviet Union have become front page news recently. This collection of essays offers some historical perspective to contemporary events by providing an analysis of eight potential or actual border disputes stemming from Soviet expansion at the end of World War II, and a discussion of the regional identities of annexed border regions within Russia. Specific treatment is given to territorial disputes concerning: Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina, Carpatho-Ukraine, Eastern Poland, East Prussia, Abrene, the East of Narva and Petserimaa, Karelia, and the Kurile Islands. This study examines why the USSR - a political system that originally prided itself on its internationalism - devoted such efforts to controlling its borders, sealing its society from the outside world. It provides a revealing case study of the strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet state.

China and Russia are rising economic and political powers that share thousands of miles of border. Despite their proximity, their interactions with each other - and with their third neighbour Mongolia - are rarely discussed. Although the three countries share a boundary, their traditions, languages and worldviews are remarkably different. Frontier Encounters presents a wide range of views on how the borders between these unique countries are enacted, produced, and crossed. It sheds light on global uncertainties: China's search for energy resources and the employment of its huge population, Russia's fear of Chinese migration, and the precarious independence of Mongolia as its neighbours negotiate to extract its plentiful resources. Bringing together anthropologists, sociologists and economists, this timely collection of essays offers new perspectives on an area that is currently of enormous economic, strategic and geo-political relevance.

The report analyzes the role of the border conflict in overall Sino-Soviet relations. In particular, this study details the two military clashes at Damansky Island in March 1969, examines plausible reasons for their occurrence, and sets them in the context of Soviet and Chinese foreign policy and domestic politics. An outgrowth of the Sino-Soviet dispute is the enigmatic border issue which has taken on a hostile and potentially explosive life of its own. The PRC is surrounded by a dozen states and a vast ocean; its northern border with the USSR is the longest and geographically the most diverse boundary in the world. This study relates an historical narrative of the border's evolution through a series of Chinese-Russian treaties, outlines the technical problems involved in the border demarcation issue, evaluates the PRC's territorial claims resulting from 'unequal treaties, ' and reviews the prospect for settlement of the border dispute by the two powers. Specifically, the Manchurian-Far Eastern segment of the border is examined with emphasis on the disputed riverine islands and the imprecisely demarcated boundary. In summary, although the border problem could be solved through serious negotiations, it would require major concessions from both sides. The broader question of territorial claims, however, is a more complex issue which, under the generally accepted principles of international law, appear to favor the Soviet Union. (Author).

Japan was sometimes described as a country of "peace" during the Cold War period, in contrast to the continental border conflicts taking place at the time, such as the China-Soviet rivalry. However, as the maritime frontier was "rediscovered" and defined by the regional powers and legal refinements of the 1970s, the process of states seeking a secure maritime zone has accelerated and maritime rivalries have become as intense as inland rivalries. This book examines the territorial disputes souring relations between Japan and its three neighbours: Russia, South Korea and China. It combines an empirical study with theoretical advancements in comparative research to understand the Cold War and post-Cold War border issues related to Japan, particularly the Northern Territories/South Kurils dispute with Russia; Takeshima/Dokto with Korea; and Senkaku/Diaoyu with China and Taiwan. Based on the history of negotiations with the Soviet Union and Russia over the course of fifty years, the study offers a series of practical suggestions to enable these disputes to be separated from arguments over their history and resolved on the basis of the principle of mutual advantage for those affected by them. This book provides not only the key to resolving these three disputes affecting East Asia, but the framework in which to seek the resolution of other territorial issues worldwide. Explaining the history and possible outcomes of Japan’s territorial disputes with Russia, South Korea and China whilst providing concrete steps for resolving entrenched territorial disputes, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Japanese Politics and International Law.
