Excerpt from Souvenir of the Visit of Colonel Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, Ex-President of the United States of America, to Chile On the 22nd, was present at a review at the Ca valry School after which a sumptuous breakfast was given in his honour. Mr. Roosevelt had nothing but praise for the magnificent display of horsemanship, and commented on Chili's splendid Army. Later he called on His Excellency the President of the Re public and at 5 pm. Assisted at a reception given in the University of Chili. Don Marcial Martinez gave a brilliant discourse on the work done by Mr. Roose velt in the United States, the Monroe Doctrine and the relations between the United States and the South American Republics. Mr. Roosevelt in reply ing, expressed his regret at not being able to addressthe audience in the Spanish language. He had lis tened with great interest to the eloquent remarks of the speaker but would not then refer to the points mentioned. He then gave an address on the demo cratic movement during the past twelve years in the United States, having prepared the speech for this occasion. At the conclusion of his remarks he was presented with an Honorary Member's Diploma of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, after which, the reception closed.
