This paper aims to develop potential strategies for Korean shipbuilders for sustainable growth by understanding the characteristics of the shipbuilding industry and the current market situation. Before the financial meltdown in 2008, in the five preceding years, the healthy global economy and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy led to 35% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in shipbuilding orders. Korean shipbuilders' sales and profits increased dramatically and they invested aggressively to meet the global demand. However, because of the financial crisis, the shipbuilding orders in 2009 decreased by 92% compared to 2007. Accordingly, the decrease in new orders will become a serious risk for Korean shipbuilders to manage because it will cause loss of economies of scale and cash deficit, at the same time. Historically, it is true that the profits of Korean shipbuilders generally mirrored the volume of global seaborne trade, which is ultimately driven by global GDP growth. However, even though the world growth rate, as predicted by OECD, turns positive in 2010, the drastic shrinkage in the shipbuilding demand may not easily recover because of oversupply of fleet volume. In this thesis, I will address current status of the shipbuilding market, project a market forecast, and analyze financial information of four major Korean shipbuilders. Considering the current market situation and financial status of Korean shipbuilders, I will suggest for Korean shipbuilders some potential business strategies as follows: focusing on offshore units, exploiting new market demand, and considering business diversification.

Economic analysis of the industrial experiences of the newly industrialized economies in Asia is generally lacking in the literature. This study attempts to fill that void by providing an in-depth discussion on the economic impact of the industrial policies of Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea in the three-and-a-half decades after 1960. Throughout the study, a broad perspective of macroeconomic development is maintained. It is highly critical of the narrow-minded objective of certain governments in maximizing the pace of industrialization at the expense of general economic well-being. A comparative analysis of the industrial experiences of the three economies also shows a diversity of constraints and processes. Singapore relied on multinational corporations, Taiwan on returned engineers, and South Korea on chaebols. There appears to be no Asian formula for industrialization. In Hong Kong, there is an ongoing debate on whether some form of industrial policy should be introduced, in view of the perception that Hong Kong is lagging behind the other economies in terms of technology. Drawing on the experiences of the other economies, the concluding chapter of the book provides an informed and balanced answer to this question. Contents: Singapore: Dominance of Multinational Corporations; Taiwan: Thriving High-Technology Industries and SME; South Korea: Government-Led Development and the Dominance of Giant Corporations; Comparison Among Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea; Strategic Considerations in the Hong Kong Context. Readership: Researchers, policy-makers and undergraduates in economics and East Asian Studies.

This book, first published in 1985, presents a comprehensive overview of the world shipbuilding industry. It contrasts the conditions which foster its development in newly-industrialised countries such as Japan, South Korea and Brazil with the problems leading to its decline in Western Europe and North America. The book discusses the supply and demand factors peculiar to shipbuilding and notes the inherent instability of the industry due to the conditions placed upon it by the economic environment. Reactions to this instability are examined from the point of view of both shipbuilding enterprises and governments. The book concludes by assessing current trends and discussing likely future developments. It is shown that much will depend on shipping costs, industrial organisation and the level of state support.

This book elucidates the potential of the shipbuilding industry for initiating economic development, which eventually leads to enhancing the prosperity of a nation. This is explained by intrinsically linking the macroeconomics of the nation with the microeconomics of the shipbuilding industry. The economic and commercial spin offs by the shipyard to the various industries have been analysed and calculated. An attempt has been made to trace the illustrious past of Indian shipbuilding from the Bronze Age, through the ancient kingdom period, to the present times, in the backdrop of Indian maritime history. The operational requirement of commercial as well as defence shipbuilding has been analysed to assess the available potential market space for the Indian shipbuilding industry. Lessons from history help to formulate future strategies. In pursuit of this, the book investigates the global trends in commercial shipbuilding since the industrial revolution period to date; the success stories of leading shipbuilding nations viz.UK, USA, Japan, Korea and China have been analysed. The benefits accrued by these nations through shipbuilding have been summarised. The strategies adopted by each of these countries to reach the pinnacle in shipbuilding have been examined and the salient features relevant for India have been identified. Productivity measurement in shipbuilding has been examined and the problems with the current system have been highlighted, along with solutions. This book suggests the usage of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a mathematical linear programming technique, as an appropriate tool to measure total productivity as well as profitability. The various ways of improving profitability in shipbuilding, by way of cost-cutting techniques, along with some Indian case studies have been explained in the book. Keeping the ‘Indian Maritime Agenda 2010-2020’ vision document in the backdrop, a strategic appreciation of the Indian shipbuilding industry has been undertaken using the SWOT, the Matrix and the Scenario analyses. Based on these analyses, strategies have been formulated for all the stakeholders who can influence the Indian shipbuilding industry. The book then identifies the need for an alchemist leader, who can harmonise all the stakeholders and thereby propel the Indian shipbuilding industry towards achieving the long-term goal of creating a prosperous India.
