Libya and Chad have gone to war with each other several times since Independence, ostensibly over their rival claims to the disputed Aozou strip. ^IJohn Wright, senior political analyst in the BBC Arabic Service, traces the ethnic, cultural and economic links between them over the centuries and shows how these connections contribute to present rivalries. There follows an analysis of Colonel Moammar Gadafi's aggressive policies towards Chad, which reflect his concern for Libya's security and desire to increase its influence; his struggles against French influence in the region; and his perception of his country as a liberating force for fellow-Muslims in Chad and elsewhere. Mr. Wright concludes that continued Libyan interest in Chadian affairs is unavoidable and that mutual hostility will continue into the foreseeable future.^R Contents: The Great Sahara; Where Africa Begins; Al-Dar al-Islam; The Ninteenth Century; Sanusi, Firearms and Slaves; The Age of Imperialism; Libya in Chad; Bibliography; Index^R

Using primary and secondary sources, Mario Azevedo and Emmanuel Nnadozie analyze and demythologize Chad's complex socioeconomic and political history as background for understanding its contemporary situation in light of the internal and external dynamics that have shaped the country. They also examine Chad's attempts at political and economic reforms and the prospects for entrenching democracy following recent elections. This book is by far the most comprehensive portrayal and evaluation of Chad's past, present, and future currently available.

Download Libya: Agriculture and Economic Development (RLE Economy of Middle East) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Oil revenues have made Libya rich since 1961, when oil exports began. This new wealth has affected all sectors of the economy and especially the agricultural sector; there have been considerable movements of population, changes in the use of land, and, possibly most important, there has been a profound change in the expectations of the Libyan people. Agriculture was the major contributor to GDP before oil and even in 1968 it was still the major sector in terms of employment, occupying 32 per cent of the employed population; as such it has always been given prominence in government planning. This study begins by introducing the major economic and geographical features relevant to agricultural development and examines the extension of agricultural activity in the twentieth century, prior to independence in 1951. The later chapters deal with the changes which have taken place since the discovery of oil with respect to land use in all parts of Libya, and deals in detail with agricultural investment and wages. First published in 1973.
