The Sea-Wolf, one of Jack London's best-known novels, is based in large part on his 1893 voyage aboard the Sophia Sutherland (or Sophie). Like the Ghost of the novel, the Sophie sailed to the far northern Pacific to hunt fur seals. London came away with the raw material for a novel. A decade later, the experience bore fruit in one of the most important works of the American seagoing tradition. The sea-wolf of the novel's title is Wolf Larsen, captain of a sealing schooner that rescues literary critic Humphrey Van Weyden after a collision in San Francisco Bay. Rather than return him to shore, however, Larsen forces Van Weyden into the role of cabin boy. As the Ghost crosses the North Pacific, Van Weyden must earn his sea legs and master such mundane tasks as washing pots and peeling potatoes. He must also learn to protect himself, as Larsen's unpredictable episodes of savage cruelty have infected the entire crew.

Sophie Swankowski is the hero from the stories she's been hearing all her life: she's the girl who will save the world. Or so she's been told. Now she and her unlikely guardian—the gruff, filthy mermaid Syrena—must travel the pitch-black seas from broken-down Chelsea, Massachusetts, to Syrena’s homeland in Poland. Along the way, Syrena will reveal the terrible truth about her past, and teach Sophie about the ages-old source of her newly discovered power. But left behind in Chelsea, without Sophie to protect them from the dark magic she's awakened, what will become of Sophie’s friends and family? Girl at the Bottom of the Sea is the follow-up to Michelle Tea's beloved Mermaid in Chelsea Creek, "a refreshing breath of air in the world of YA, equal parts eerie, heartbreaking, and fantastical." (ZYZZYVA).

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The sea lion, one of Jack London's best-known novels, is based largely on his 1893 trip aboard the Sophia Sutherland (or Sophie). Like the Phantom of the novel, Sophie sailed to the north end of the Pacific to hunt seals. London came out with the raw material for a novel. A decade later, the experience bore fruit in one of the most important works of the American maritime tradition. The sea lion of the novel's title is Wolf Larsen, captain of a sealing schooner who rescues literary critic Humphrey Van Weyden after a collision in San Francisco Bay. However, instead of returning it to the shore, Larsen forces Van Weyden to play the role of a cabin boy. When the Ghost crosses the North Pacific, Van Weyden must earn his legs and master such worldly tasks as washing pots and peeling potatoes. You must also learn to protect yourself, as Larsen's unpredictable episodes of wild cruelty have infected the entire crew. At sea, Larsen can interpret the tyrant as easily as any agent of border law, but it is anything but petty. He is an educated man who justifies his violent nature with the concept of survival of the fittest. As Van Weyden explains, "the big eat the little they can keep moving, the strong eat the weak so they can retain their strength."
