Rarely Addressed Throughout Church History, the doctrine of adoption has seen fresh attention in recent years. Although valuable, contemporary studies have focused primarily on etymological, cultural, and pastoral considerations, giving little to no attention to vital systematic theological concerns. In this groundbreaking work, Professor David Garner examines the function of adoption in Pauline thought: its relationship to the doctrines of Christ, the Holy Spirit, eschatology, and union with Christ, as well as its primary place among the other benefits of salvation. Adoption frames Pauline soteriology, Garner argues, and defines the Trinitarian, familial context of redemption in Christ, the Son of God. Properly understood, adoption's paradigm-shifting implications extend deep and far. Book jacket.

Comments from bestselling author P.J. O'Rourke: Sons in the Shadow is a wonderful book. I was particularly moved by the "Forbes and Fallout" and "Never Sell - Never?" chapters. I admire Park's honesty and bravery in putting all this down on paper (and I loved naming the dog "Forbes"). Having grown up in a family business (albeit on a much smaller scale), I'm alive to the politics involved. My grandfather, J.J. O'Rourke, started O'Rourke Buick in Toldeo, Ohio and everyone in my enormous Irish family was involved. (My first job was there, of course.) I took my wife to meet my family and she said, afterward, "All anybody talks about is your Grandpa Jake - and he's been dead for 50 years." I told her, "They'll still be talking when he's been dead for 100." Sounds like the same will be true of the senior Roy Park. I also want to thank the author for a thought I intend to drill in to my children: "God gave us a soul. Our duty is to give it meaning. He wants it back." Congratulations on a splendid book - one that should be a text in every MBA program. Business is a lot more than a bunch of numbers. (As some business types on Wall Street have been finding out.) Everything in life is about people. We can finish our MBA studies or our Poly Sci studies or our J-School studies, or whatever, but we're never done with our study of people. And Park has written a great one.

With an introduction by Rosamund Bartlett and an afterword by Tatiana Tolstaya Turgenev's depiction of the conflict between generations and their ideals stunned readers when Fathers and Sons was first published in 1862. But many could also sympathize with Arkady's fascination with its nihilist hero whose story vividly captures the hopes and regrets of a changing Russia. [Buy this book now only at iUniverse.com bookstore. Order from bookstores everywhere in 4-6 weeks!] Much as Nancy Friday's My Mother My Self explored the mother-daughter bond, this book illuminates the emotional themes that surround the important relationship betyween fathers and sons in terms both practical and theoretical, both enlightening and moving. Drawing upon extensive case-history material, based on interviews with over 100 fathers and sons from a cross section of society, Yablonsky defines the various prototypes of each -- autocratic, egocentric, and distant fathers, compliant and rebellious sons; their interactions and interdependencies; their individual rights and duties and their obligations to each other ; the normal and pathological conflicts between them and how mothers and daughters can intervene constructively in such conflicts; the degree to which a father's status in the world can affect his son's aspirations -- and how a son's success or failure can affect his father; and other important dimensions of this complex relationship. Fathers and Sons is an important, definitive, highly useful guide for all men who want to improve their own such relationships and for the women who want to better understand the fathers and sons in their lives.

Dad's behavior communicates a lot to his son. In traditional families, a son looks up to his dad as a model for his behavior. When a dad creates opportunities for free discussions with his son, the son grows up respecting and trusting him as his model. On the other hand, when a dad becomes authoritarian, lays down rules and regulations for his son without adequate and reasonable explanations or discussions, the son may resent it, feel alienated, and seek other avenues, albeit honorable or dishonorable ones, for answers to his problems. "Sons and Dads: Who will reconcile them," is a fiction-Christian narrative that talks about two sons, their dads, the trials and tribulations they encountered, and finally how they got reconciled. The episodes contained in the book are relevant, if not similar, to what is happening in current times.

This groundbreaking study brings into dialogue for the first time the writings of Julian, the last non-Christian Roman Emperor, and his most outspoken critic, Bishop Gregory of Nazianzus, a central figure of Christianity. Susanna Elm compares these two men not to draw out the obvious contrast between the Church and the Emperor’s neo-Paganism, but rather to find their common intellectual and social grounding. Her insightful analysis, supplemented by her magisterial command of sources, demonstrates the ways in which both men were part of the same dialectical whole. Elm recasts both Julian and Gregory as men entirely of their times, showing how the Roman Empire in fact provided Christianity with the ideological and social matrix without which its longevity and dynamism would have been inconceivable.

"Biblical sonship is a position in Christ, not a gender. Dr. Mark Hanby has understood this powerful truth and explained it better than any other man I know." --Don Nori, Publisher, Destiny Image, Inc. Every Elijah needs an Elisha. Every Paul needs a Timothy. Every father needs a son. Every Church needs a generation prepared to step into her God-intended destiny. The true hope of the Church is the preparation of the sons in the house. In The Order of a Son, Mark Hanby, author, father, mentor and apostle shows clearly, simply and powerfully how the anointing of the father is passed down to spiritual sons, helping them to become mature fathers. Without the true ministry of fathers to sons, there can never be a double-portion blessing to continue the Lord's work and the church will most certainly die in the next generations. True fathers will: Empower sons to receive their godly inheritance Teach their sons to forge lasting relationships Show the true biblical blueprint for better evangelism Help their sons to step into the call of God Teach sensitivity to the Holy Spirit The mark of a mature ministry is one that desires sons and not just followers. Dr. Mark Hanby provides a biblical base that will enable the Church to meet her future now--in her sons.
