This book consists of songs and instrumental music from the Semai, an indigenous group collectively known as the Orang Asli of Malaysia. The songs in this book include 5 jenulak, which are performed during both healing ceremonies and festive celebrations. There are also 2 folk songs sung to the accompaniment of a kereb (plucked and strummed bamboo lute). Instrumental music for recreational purpose includes 2 pieces on the pensol (bamboo nose flue). The songs and music are transcribed to approximate pitches and rhythm through the western notation system. The song text is written according to the onomatopoeia style. The original music and songs were performed by Bah Kang a/l (son of) Bah Mat, a halaq (shaman) from the Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Terang, Kampar, Perak and his son, Alang a/l Bah Kang from Kampung Orang Asli Batu 14 in Tapah, Perak in Malaysia. The audio recording is published by cdbaby.com in 2019, under the album titled 'Indigenous Semai Mystical Rainforest Music of Malaysia'.

This proceeding is the outcome of an international seminar organized by the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in 2023. This international seminar was called "ISPsy 6th" with the theme "Religiosity and Cultural Diversity for Strengthening Mental Well-Being." Manuscripts accepted for ISPsy 6th 2023 amounted to 62% of the total articles collected. This seminar featured several topics including Clinical Psychology, Organizational/Industrial Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Psychometrics, Islamic Studies Related to Human Behavior, Social Science, Education, and Neuroscience. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P as the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs. Speakers at this international seminar included Dr. Hanan Dover as the Vice President of the International Association of Muslim Psychologists (IAMP), Dr. Rania Awaad, M.D as the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab, Dr. Nor Akmar Nordin as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology, School of Human Resource Development and Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Retno Dwiyanti, M.Si., Ph.D as a lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. This proceeding was able to proceed smoothly thanks to the support and good communication from all parties involved. This book seeks to break new ground, both empirically and conceptually, in examining discourses of identity formation and the agency of critical social practices in Malaysia. Taking an inclusive cultural studies perspective, it questions the ideological narrative of ‘race’ and ‘ethnicity’ that dominates explanations of conflicts and cleavages in the Malaysian context. The contributions are organised in three broad themes. ‘Identities in Contestation: Borders, Complexities and Hybridities’ takes a range of empirical studies—literary translation, religion, gender, ethnicity, indigeneity and sexual orientation—to break down preconceived notions of fixed identities. This then opens up an examination of ‘Identities and Movements: Agency and Alternative Discourses’, in which contributors deal with counter-hegemonic social movements—of anti-racism, young people, environmentalism and independent publishing—that explicitly seek to open up greater critical, democratic space within the Malaysian polity. The third section, ‘Identities and Narratives: Culture and the Media’, then provides a close textual reading of some exemplars of new cultural and media practices found in oral testimonies, popular music, film, radio programming and storytelling who have consciously created bodies of work that question the dominant national narrative.
