Excerpt from Some Trends in Land Classes I and II: An Analysis of Two Areas in Southern New York In 1927, studies were made in several areas throughout southern and central New York, the results of which are reported in Bulletin 490, Abandoned Farm Areas in New York. In general these studies show that the abandoned areas are naturally low in productivity. This condition is due primarily to poor soil and a short growing season resulting from high elevations. The size and condition of buildings, the amount of livestock kept, the kind of crops grown, and the yields per acre are all evidences of this low productivity. The almost exclusive use of the cleared land for small grains, hav and pasture, and the fact that the yields were from one-third to one-half less than State average in 1926 during a comparatively good farming period and under the management of experienced farmers is substantial evidence that cannot be overlooked (table Furthermore, all facts in the history of these areas would bear out the conclusion that the present low productivity is not a new thing and that it is primarily a result of inherent inability to pro duce rather than soil depletion or poor management.
