Excerpt from Some Historical Phases of Modern Japan As Exchange Professor to the United States, during the year 1914, it was my privilege to visit many different Universities and Colleges in the East, South, and Middle West. Looking back over my sojourn in the States I feel a deep sense of gratitude to my American friends for their uniform courtesy and sympathy. Being in daily association with kind-hearted friends, old and new, it was difficult to realize that there was an important international question, the solution of which I might advantageously study, otherwise than from the standpoint of a public spirited citizen of Japan. President Wilson had indeed remarked to me, incidentally, that there were "a few sore spots" in the United States. It is my hope that these "sore spots" may be healed by the friendly intercourse of the people of the Pacific Coast with the people of the Orient at the World's Panama-Pacific Exposition. With regard to the ultimate solution of the pending agrarian and immigration problems on the Pacific Coast, I should like to say, that we can with patience wait upon the near future when they can be amicably adjusted with justice and equity. As a souvenir of my lecture tour I have desired to preserve some of my lectures in permanent form. This small volume is the outcome of this aspiration. Excerpt from Japan, the Rise of a Modern Power My father died while this book was in an incomplete state, although the greater part of it was in type; and it is owing to the kindness of several of his friends who have consented to put the work into final form that it has become possible to publish it. In writing it his object was to describe, for English-speaking people, the main facts of Japanese history. Despite the efforts of numerous Orientalists to popularize knowledge of Japanese history and of Japanese political, economic, and social conditions, he felt that a great deal has yet to be done before the average British youth and adult will be as familiar with Japan as the average Japanese youth and adult are with Great Britain. As Viscount Chinda, the Japanese Ambassador to the Court of St. James, said in addressing the British present at a meeting of, the Japan Society held in London on December 13, 1916, although there never had been a time when the bonds of fraternal feelings between the Japanese and the British had been so strong, 'you do not know one-tenth as much about us as we do about you'. Originally published in 1975, much of Western scholarly writing on Japan had in recent years concerned the study of modernisation. The papers in this volume, which were prepared by leading specialists from Europe and Israel, concentrate on the problems arising from modernisation, rather than on an analysis of the process itself. The historical papers deal with various aspects of the political and international tensions that link modernisation to Japanese expansion and the Second World War: the civil war of 1868; early newspapers and nationalist opinion; the Washington Conference; politics in the 1930s; the bombing of Japan in 1945. Those on literature examine some related themes concerning national attitudes, as expressed in drama and the novel, especially in the context of the relationship of modern ideas and institutions to traditional culture and society. Similar questions are raised by the discussion of new post-war religions, as well as in papers on the use of leisure and on industrial relations in contemporary Japan. Finally, there are two contributions dealing with the economic consequences of the industrial miracle that has marked the latest phase of modernisation, one on balance of payments difficulties and one on current plans to deal with the problems of urban growth. Many of these papers present the results of hitherto unpublished research of great importance to students of modern Japan.
