The Chicago metropolitan area has experienced major suburban growth, particularly during the period 1970 to 1990. The region became more decentralized as population growth and development took place in the outlying suburban areas. This demographic shift has resulted in changes in development patterns that have impacted employment centers and quality of life throughout the region. The objective of this paper is to provide an in-depth analysis of the changes in development trends and identify types and models of suburban communities that face growth most directly. It will then use Chicago region case studies to offer an analysis of the impact of suburban growth from regional, sub-regional (county), and local (municipal) perspectives. Finally, the results of the analysis are interpreted and possible solutions to existing problems are discussed, including options for strategic action relating to growth management and regional cooperation.
