Rapid increases in energy demand and international drive to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuels have led many oil-rich countries to diversify their energy portfolio and resources. Libya is one of these countries, and it has recently become interested in utilizing its renewable-energy resources in order to reduce financial and energy dependency on oil reserves. This paper introduces an original multicriteria decision-making Pairwise-CODAS model in which the modification of the CODAS method was made using Linguistic Neutrosophic Numbers (LNN).

The Kenyan government is trying to reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with the production and disposal of solid waste. This study identifies and reviews existing policies, and presents economic incentives to reduce littering and emissions generated from the production, collection, transportation and disposal of polythene bags. The publication sets out: (i) to promote the production and consumption of cleaner packaging alternatives in Kenya; (ii) to formulate a policy proposal in collection, transport, disposal and reuse of polythene bags; (iii) to raise awareness of the problems relating to polythene bags; (iv) to support the development of environmentally friendly bags, as well as to assist other policymakers wishing to implement sustainable policy packages in the waste sector.

Solid waste management is a global concern, and landfilling remains the predominant management method in most areas of the world. This book provides a comprehensive view of state-of-the-art methods to manage landfills more sustainably, drawing upon more than two decades of research, design, and operational experiences at operating sites across the world. Sustainable landfills implement one or multiple technologies to control and enhance the degradation of waste materials to realize a multitude of potential benefits during or shortly after the landfill’s operating phase. This book presents detailed approaches in the development, design, operation, and monitoring of sustainable landfills. Case studies showcasing the benefits and challenges of sustainable landfill technologies are also provided to give the reader additional context. The intent of the book is to serve as a reference guide for regulatory personnel, a practical tool for designers and engineers to build on for site-specific applications of sustainable landfill technologies, and a comprehensive resource for researchers who are continuing to explore new and better ways to more sustainably manage waste materials.

Proper landfill site selection is the basis of preliminary landfill process in evading undesirable long-term effects. The procedure of selection must refer to approved guidelines that put into considerations the social, environmental, and technical aspects in ensuring sustainability of living hood process. This book reviews and classifies common guidelines to landfill siting criteria adopted by various international bodies. The criteria are mostly common but vary in parameters and reliant on the social-economic, environmental requirements, size and physical topography of respective countries. A hypothetical comparative study of landfill site selection is accomplished using constraint mapping technique (CMT) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) group decision making. Consecutively, the GIS Multi Criteria Evaluation (MCE) site selection model using the weighted linear combination (WLC) was incorporated. The result has shown that site selection model pertaining to landfill is influenced by preferences of criteria as well as the selection of criteria.

Geographic Information Systems for Geoscientists: Modelling with GIS provides an introduction to the ideas and practice of GIS to students and professionals from a variety of geoscience backgrounds. The emphasis in the book is to show how spatial data from various sources (principally paper maps, digital images and tabular data from point samples) can be captured in a GIS database, manipulated, and transformed to extract particular features in the data, and combined together to produce new derived maps, that are useful for decision-making and for understanding spatial interrelationship. The book begins by defining the meaning, purpose, and functions of GIS. It then illustrates a typical GIS application. Subsequent chapters discuss methods for organizing spatial data in a GIS; data input and data visualization; transformation of spatial data from one data structure to another; and the combination, analysis, and modeling of maps in both raster and vector formats. This book is intended as both a textbook for a course on GIS, and also for those professional geoscientists who wish to understand something about the subject. Readers with a mathematical bent will get more out of the later chapters, but relatively non-numerate individuals will understand the general purpose and approach, and will be able to apply methods of map modeling to clearly-defined problems.
