Excerpt from Soldering, Brazing, and Welding Apart from the use of rivets, screws, etc., metal is commonly joined by soldering, brazing, or welding, three groups of processes that have one thing in com mon - the use of heat to fuse either the metals them selves or an alloy which is interposed to consolidate the joint. The word solder is derived through the French from a Latin word meaning solid. Soldering may be soft or hard. Soft-solder ing uses lead-tin alloys which are easily melted in a bunsen gas flame or with a hot iron or bit; while hard soldering employs a silver-copper alloy, to melt which a mouth blowpipe at least is necessary. Brazing is hard-soldering with spelter (brass), and a forge or a heavy blowlamp or a powerful blowpipe must be employed to provide the heat. Excerpt from Soldering, How to Do It The value of this little book is far more than its price, 50 cents. Any one who possesses it, has a means of earning a good living in their posses sion, also, if they never use the art of soldering as a means of earning a living the information is still worth much to them because they are sure to make use of it. Every boy and girl in school should learn to solder; every teacher should learn and every class room should have a soldering iron. Excerpt from Methods of Welding Metals The welding of brass, copper, and some other metals, is im practicable by the old hand method since copper would need to be raised to a very high temperature as compared with iron, and it is then.high1y oxidizable and liable to form a scale difficult to treat by any flux. It also passes quickly from the solid state to the molten state and is brittle near the welding temperature. With brass, it is difficult to avoid volatilization of the zinc before the Oopper constituent has been raised to the necessary temperature, and, furthermore, the alloy becomes very brittle near the welding temperature. Because of these facts such metals and alloys have been.united by brazing or soldering, Operations requiring considerable skill, and are expensive in the matter of solder, fluxes, heating appliances and labor charges. Excerpt from Simple Soldering: Both Hard and Soft, Together With Descriptions Home-Made Apparatus Necessary for the Art The action of metals under heat; the unions resulting from the melting and amalgamations or welding properties of certain metallic combi nations; the fluxes required to clean and protect the metals to be joined; the number of degrees of heat needed, etc are aptly described in other works. But the method of securing the desired result in the simplest possible manner is not often clear, and to that end this little book is written. Excerpt from Soft Soldering, Hard, Soldering and Brazing: A Practical Treatise on Tools, Material and Operations; For the Use of Metal Workers, Plumbers, Tinners, Mechanics, and Manufacturers The operations of soldering and brazing are suggestive to some as being comparatively simple of execution, requiring no special degree of skill or experience on the part of the workman. As a matter of fact they involve a wide range of manipulation and frequently demand experienced workmanship of a high order. At the same time so many mechanics are accustomed to perform soldering operations with poorly prepared tools and with appliances which might be greatly improved upon, that the author is led to offer this book in the hope that it will serve as a practical aid to improved methods, thereby serving the interests of mechanics who seek advancement as well as employers who are alert to the importance of efficiency and economy in the methods pursued in their establishments. Therefore the author has dwelt with considerable fullness upon the many phases of soldering and brazing, giving the results of experience and observation acquired through long practice and experiment in these channels. If the result is accomplished, of assisting operators to a larger appreciation of the requirements of expert workmanship in these really important branches of mechanics, he shall consider that the time and labor spent in preparing the treatise has been well applied.
