Excerpt from Soil-Temperature Regimes: Their Characteristics and Predictability Soil temperature is a parameter important to both soil genesis and soil use. It was taken into account in older soil classification systems, and it must not be forgotten in any-new systems to be used in our national cooperative soil survey. An investigation was made of the energy exchange at the air-soil interface. The temperature regime in the soil and the thermal response of the soil to various meteorological parameters such as sunshine, air temperature, and wind speed were studied. A series of case studies, showing the temperature response of the soil in several typical weather situations were prepared and analyzed. A set of multiple regression equations was calculated to show quantitatively the temperature change in the soil as a result of a given change in the external meteorological conditions. The diumal and annual cycles of soil and air temperature, air-soil temperature difference, and heat flux in the soil were studied. In addition the annual cycle of daily range of soil temperature and the inter-diurnal temperature variability were analyzed. Data on frost in the soil are presented.
