Factorization is the central ingredient in any theoretical prediction for collider experiments. I introduce a factorization formalism that can be applied to any desired observable, like event shapes or jet observables, for any number of jets and a wide range of jet algorithms in leptonic or hadronic collisions. This is achieved by using soft-collinear effective theory to prove the formal factorization of a generic fully-differential cross section in terms of a hard coefficient, and generic jet and soft functions. The factorization formula for any such observable immediately follows from our general result, including the precise definition of the functions appropriate for the observable in question. As a first application, I present a new prediction of angularity distributions in e+e- annihilation. Angularities tau_a are an infinite class of event shapes which vary in their sensitivity to the substructure of jets in the final state, controlled by a continuous parameter a

In this thesis, we present several new techniques for the resummation of observables relevant to jet physics at the LHC using effective field theory techniques. Specifically, we first derive the factorization theorem and calculate the generic soft function for N-jet threshold resummation. This allows for dynamic threshold resummation at hadron colliders, where parton distribution functions may enhance threshold effects. Then we develop a new metric to gauge the importance of threshold resummation in a process-independent manner. This also allows us to determine the relevant scales for threshold resummation without the introduction of an arbitrary procedure. Next, we present a new subtraction technique for the calculation of soft functions with complex phase space boundaries. This technique is especially useful in calculations involving eta-phi jet algorithms, which are common at hadron colliders. Finally, we discuss a new regularization scheme for real emission diagrams and present an example of said scheme.

In this thesis, I develop an exclusive cone jet algorithm based on the principles of jet substructure and demonstrate its use for physics analyses at the Large Hadron Collider. Based on the event shape N-jettiness, this algorithm, called "XCone," partitions the event into a fixed number of conical jets of size RO in the rapidity-azimuth plane. This algorithm is designed to locate substructure independent of momentum, allowing accurate resolution of jets at both low and high energy scales. I present three potential analyses using XCone to search for heavy resonances, Higgs bosons, and top quarks at various momenta and show that it reconstructs these particles with efficiencies between 60% and 80% without any additional substructure techniques, and maintains this efficiency over a wide kinematic range. This algorithm provides many key advantages over traditional jet algorithms that make it appealing for use at the LHC and other high energy particle colliders.

This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

Among resummation techniques for perturbative QCD in the context of collider and flavor physics, soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) has emerged as both a powerful and versatile tool, having been applied to a large variety of processes, from B-meson decays to jet production at the LHC. This book provides a concise, pedagogical introduction to this technique. It discusses the expansion of Feynman diagrams around the high-energy limit, followed by the explicit construction of the effective Lagrangian - first for a scalar theory, then for QCD. The underlying concepts are illustrated with the quark vector form factor at large momentum transfer, and the formalism is applied to compute soft-gluon resummation and to perform transverse-momentum resummation for the Drell-Yan process utilizing renormalization group evolution in SCET. Finally, the infrared structure of n-point gauge-theory amplitudes is analyzed by relating them to effective-theory operators. This text is suitable for graduate students and non-specialist researchers alike as it requires only basic knowledge of perturbative QCD.

Guido Altarelli was a leading figure in 20th century particle physics. His scientific contributions and leadership played a key role in the development of the Standard Model of fundamental interactions, as well as the current search for new physics beyond it, both at and beyond CERN. This book is a collection of original contributions, at the cutting edge of scientific research, by some of the leading theoretical and experimental high-energy physicists currently in the field. These were inspired by Guido's ideas, whether directly or indirectly. This book is ideal for researchers looking to keep up with the latest developments in high-energy physics.
