Download Using Class and Team Building Activities to Create Community in My Classroom Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This action research project studied how the regular repeated use of class and teambuilding activities affected the feeling of community within a 6th grade social studies classroom. This study developed because of teacher concerns about transition issues for students entering middle school from the self-contained classrooms of three feeder elementary schools. Initially students in this classroom were surveyed about these concerns. Following the survey, students participated in a variety of daily class and team building activities. Conclusions were drawn from daily rating comment sheets, teacher observations, student interviews, and comparisons of pare and post survey responses. Results indicate that students: found the activities to be enjoyable, became familiar with new classmates, were engaged and worked cooperatively and effectively together, and felt they were part of a positive learning community.
