“A quirky, funny, and deeply thoughtful book”* that’s “filled with characters you’ll love and wish you lived next door to in real life”** from the author of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. Lilian Girvan has been a single mother for three years—ever since her husband died in a car accident. One mental breakdown and some random suicidal thoughts later, she’s just starting to get the hang of this widow thing. She can now get her two girls to school, show up to work, and watch TV like a pro. The only problem is she’s becoming overwhelmed with being underwhelmed. At least her textbook illustrating job has some perks—like actually being called upon to draw whale genitalia. Oh, and there’s that vegetable-gardening class her boss signed her up for. Apparently, being the chosen illustrator for a series of boutique vegetable guides means getting your hands dirty, literally. Wallowing around in compost on a Saturday morning can’t be much worse than wallowing around in pajamas and self-pity. After recruiting her kids and insanely supportive sister to join her, Lilian shows up at the Los Angeles botanical garden feeling out of her element. But what she’ll soon discover—with the help of a patient instructor and a quirky group of gardeners—is that into every life a little sun must shine, whether you want it to or not... Excerpt from Small Beginnings: Or, the Way to Get On John walter was born at Clapham on the 23d February, 1776. His father, a newspaper proprietor and printer in London, was a man of considerable ability, who, by the time John came to be ready for a profession, had realised some money. It would seem that it was a subject of doubt whether the young man should continue his father's business or go into the Church. The latter alternative was at first adopted; but we are not told how it came to be departed from, though it is likely that John Walter, who was not only a far-seeing but a conscientious youth from the beginning, and had early accustomed himself to look to the connection between means and ends, discovered that there was, in regard to him, a false reckoning. The intention was changed, and the first step taken which was to lead to fortune and renown, by binding him as an apprentice to his father, and learning him the art of composing or setting up types. He was some time after sent to Oxford, where he remained only one year; and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In a time before youth were welcomed in short-term missions, Loren Cunningham founded Youth With A Mission to unlock the world for millions. He called young and old, women and men, and every ethnicity to go. Loren Cunningham's dream began with a vision - waves of young people from every nation going to every nation, telling everyone, everywhere about Jesus. How did God move Loren's dream from vision to reality and take him to every country on earth? Loren and his wife, Darlene, grew through tough lessons on hearing and obeying the Lord. This exciting story of Youth With A Mission shows how hearing God's voice is for every believer. God wants to speak directly to each of His beloved children, not to just a few “spiritual elite.” Priscilla Shirer looks at God’s call to Samuel and uncovers six characteristics essential for hearing from God: A simple RELATIONSHIP, unfettered by sin or pride A single-minded WORSHIP, focused on God and His glory A set-apart HOLINESS, determined to live a life that honors Him A still ATTENTIVENESS, willing to be silent before Him A sold-out HUNGER, passionately pursuing God’s presence A servant SPIRIT, submitted to God’s call Her warmth and honesty, combined with a wealth of practical help, will inspire you to cultivate these traits in your own life. By doing so, you will prepare yourself to draw closer to Him and to hear His voice more clearly.
