By reference to the table the relative size will be quickly seen. A spoonful of any kind of seasoning, spice, soda, cream of tartar, salt, etc., is measured by taking up a spoonful lightly, and leveling it with a knife. Flour, Sugar, butter, meal, baking powder, etc., are measured rounding. A rounding spoonful is measured by taking a spoonful of the material, and lightly shaking till the material is as convex on the top as the spoon is concave. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... (6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Excerpt from The High School Cookery Book This book has been written in the hope that it might be useful in secondary schools and training colleges which recognise the scientific basis of housecraft and which endeavour, as far as is practicable, to correlate the teaching of science and housecraft. The book is adapted for the use of pupils preparing for such examinations as that of the Housecraft Matriculation of the Joint Board of the Northern Universities, and the questions and practical tests will be found suitable for it. While not written specially to suit the present war conditions, stress is laid throughout on the utilisation of food to the utmost. Excerpt from Brill's Family Recipe Book In issuing this, om first number of Brill's Receipt Book, we aim to make it brief, comprehensive and prae tical. A general, rather than a scientific arrangement has been adopted, as the object of the work is popular and universal, and though useful to men of science, it is more especially addressed to practical persons, heads of fami lies, and the public at large. There are few persons who will not find on looking over its pages, some article that will interest them, and be of some use and advantage to them. The sources from which the materials of the work have been gathered, render it deserving of the utmost confidence; 3. Large portion having been derived from personal experience. The publisher therefpre presents to the mistresses and managers of domestic economy, the various classes of experimental artisans and men of busi ness, both operative and traders, a volume which will be universally admitted to be superior to every preceding collection of receipts for general utility. Excerpt from Cups and Spoons: A Collection of Tested and Approved Recipes An old subject, but a very important one. See that it receives proper attention, and there is no time like the present. You have your capital invested, it may be, in the savings bank, or in notes, or in bonds, where the only thing to be attended to is to collect the interest or to cut off the coupons; but if your capital is invested in a mill, block, stock in trade, dwelling or household furniture, it is of the greatest importance to see that you are protected, in part, at least, against loss by fire.
