My husband is cruel, ruthless, and despicable.I hate him with every fiber of my being. The only reason I haven't killed him or tried to run away is because of the promise I made. I sold myself to save someone I loved...and this is the price I have to pay.I was sitting alone in a bar when the most handsome man walked inside. Striking blue eyes, cheekbones as sharp as glass, and a muscular body fit for a war. He was gorgeous. I couldn't take my eyes off him. When he bought me a drink, I didn't say no. I'd been unfulfilled for so long, and I wanted a real man for the night. My husband had his affairs so why couldn't I?I noticed the peculiar ring on his right hand, a diamond carved into a skull. If only I'd known what that meant, I would have known who this man was.The Skull King.A man more cruel and ruthless than my own husband.

This study of the rainmakers of the Nilotic Sudan means a breakthrough in anthropological thinking on African political systems. Taking his inspiration from Rene Girard's theory of consensual scapegoating the author shows that the long standing distinction of states and stateless societies as two fundamentally different political types does not hold. Centralized and segmentary systems only differ in the relative emphasis put on the victimary role of the king as compared with that of enemy victims. Kings of Disaster so proposes an uninvolved solution to the vexed problem of regicide. Recent cases occurring during the great drought of the mid-1980's are discribed and analyzed. Making simultaneous use of first-hand field data and archival sources, the book offers the first presentation of five Nilotic communities on the East Bank of the Nile. This study offers a new perspective on the role of violence in the structuring of society.

A longtime resident of Kings Cross, celebrated Australian author, playwright, and screenwriter Louis Lowra, in an ode to the neighborhood, cajoles readers into reimagining the most infamous and misunderstood place in Australia, a magnet for bohemianism, cosmopolitanism, and organized crime. In a wildly energetic book that walks the streets, sits in bars, chats with locals, and spends time in clubs and apartments where the walls, if they could talk, would tell a story or two, Nowra traverses the history and the future of his beloved neighborhood. He burrows beneath the sensationalist narrative of an underbelly of sex and sin to reveal stories and a cast of characters too astonishing to be fictitious. Backpackers, prostitutes, strippers, chefs, poets, beggars, booksellers, doctors, gangsters, judges, artists, and others live side-by-side in Kings Cross, and eyewitness, historian, and man-about-town Louis Nowra is the perfect guide to a no-holds-barred place that is as much physical as it is a state of mind.
