One can obtain as many opinions about television as there are people with eyes. No two people see it in exactly the same way. You may not be aware of it, but up there, in that compartment of your brain where memories are stored, all sorts of strange images are stockpiled. The purpose of this book is to coax those memories out of their hiding places and bring them front and center, where you can savor them anew. Although this book is intended to be a comprehensive review of television during the past twenty years-the two decades that have passed since the medium became a commercial reality- it is not to be just a scholarly history. The programs and people represented here were chosen not because they were "good" or "popular" or "successful," but because each contributed, in some large or small way, to the progress of television.

From the American Side I went to the USSR for the first time in 1982 to attend the 11th meeting of the International Union for Quaternary research (INQUA) held at the Moscow State University. At that time relations between our two countries were anything but congenial and many restrictions were placed on our viewing the archaeological and paleontological collections and labora tory facilities. This was not the ideal climate for the free exchange of ideas needed for meaningful research. However, it was obvious to us that the strained relations did not extend to scientific discussions between scholars. We left that meeting well aware that if the problems of prehistoric Old World-New World relationships were to be resolved, it would eventually require cooperative research efforts within the world community of archaeologists. At that time, the pre-Clovis problem in New World archaeology was foremost in the minds of many North American researchers: tool technology and assemblages were being studied as a possible means of establishing cultural relationships across the Bering Strait, Clovis sites and mammoth kills were being looked at with new ideas for interpretation, and New World researchers realized that to resolve these questions they had to become familiar with the archaeological record of northeast Asia. A chance meeting of the writer with Olga Soffer in 1983 led to serious discussions of the sites on the Russian or East European Plain.

"The immigrant with whom we are primarily interested was Georg Christoff Oechslen. Tradition has it that his family had lived in Alsace for a generation or two already after leaving Schaffhausen, and that his father had been impressed into the Army of Frederick William I ... [he] was born about 1705-1706 ... arrived in Philadelphia on October 2, 1727 on the ship "Adventure" ... apparently lived in the vacinity of Philadelphia for a few years, joining in that extensive excursion of the "Pennsylvania Germans" to Loudoun County, Virginia ... He was married about the same time, but whether in Pennsylvania or Virginia is not known, nor is the maiden name of his wife known, other than that she was called Catherine"--Page 18. Descendants eventually adopted the surname Exline and Axline. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, California and elsewhere
